    Hi, Welcome to WindowsBBS.

    Try this:

    1. Open a command prompt: go to Start > Run and type cmd in the Open box, click OK
    2. Stop Automatic Update Service; type Net stop wuauserv (press Enter) .
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Force a Windows Update detection and see if that works.

I have just tried Arie's fix and then went to Windows Update, again, the 97 files downloaded, but none of them installed. I'll check out PeteC's fix and see if that makes a difference

    Fixes didn't work

I tried Chris' fixes and went though all 3 fixes and tried to update after each one and I still have the same issue. File Downloads but doesn't install. Any other suggestions?

Actually, something worth a note, when I followed step 1 (from the link Chris sent) and typed %windir% it said "...is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" so I did a search for the SoftwareDistribution file via search and renamed it that way.

But none of the steps have fixed the problem for me...:(

You may want to explain which fixes you tried, as I see no fixes listed by Chris here?

Sorry Arie - I should have written PeteC's fixes. He has a link on his comment, and I tried all 3 steps, and nothing has helped...

If that is indeed the same PC, then...heh...yeah you have other issues to sort out I suppose. If not, then, if the updates downloaded but won't install, you 'could' try manually installing them.
From what I can remember (I just tried verifying on my own PC but didn't download any new updates), the updates are saved here when they download C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\[long key name blahblahblah].
Usually the file that will run the update is in a directory under the [long key name]\update\update.exe ... usually. I seem to recall that on rare occasions, the [long key name] format may not be used and there may be only one executable and very few other files.

Maybe some other Microsoft update techs could throw some light on the ups and downs of doing this.

However, this still doesn't solve the error you get when trying to have it done automatically but it will get you the updates.

I have come across lots of instances where updates wont install. Try downloading DialaFix here http://freewarewiki.com/DialaFix this has worked everytime for us. It's wortha try.

    Hi Cant,

You are not alone... there are several circumstances under which Updates will Download but not Install, mostly related to Permissions and interfering software. The Error Code you list is when there is a Failure to get a session from a Data Store... but why? Let me add to the comments above.

    1. Make sure that you have Administrators Permissions and then go to the Updates MS page and let it list what you are missing.
    2. Stop all AV, Malware, Firewalls running on your machine... just before you click on Install Updates, when on the Updates MS page and your missing updates are listed.
    3. Let the install run. If you still note that all Updates failed to install, then check into your Update History in the Left Column of the Updates MS page.
    4. You should see listed the Updates that have Failed to Install. Click on the little red ball under the Failed Column and a new window will open with the corresponding Error Code. If, as I suspect, it is 0x80070005, your problem is with Permissions. If it is NOT this Error Code, come back and tell us what it is.

Altho the procedure listed in the blog below may seems complicated, READ the whole Blog before touching your machine and then just print out the instructions, follow them to the letter with patience and then try your Updates again. I have had tremendous success with it.

Let us know how it went and please, be specific with details. Good luck.
