We have had some issues with our PC of late, and we have been trying to fix the problelm.

On the weekend, the computer just shut down on us and now it won't re-start. It starts with a black screen offering you to go into 1. Safe mode, 2. safe mode with Networking, 3. safe mode (with something else), 4. last configuration of windows that worked, or 5. start windows normally.

Bu selecting options 1-3 and 5, the computer just restarts. When you select option 4, the computer looks like it's loading and then flashes a blue screen (can't see what it says as it's too quick) and then restarts.

I can get to the setup screen and I have tried going though BIOS (pressing F8) to force the computer to start via the Recovery CD, but it doesn't.

I have Windows XP Home SP2 on there, and a bucket load of photo's of my little one that I don't want to loose :(

I can follow directions well, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be very greatful.

PS - I don't have any anti-virus on at the moment, so I might have a worm or something - All our issues started when we un-installed Norton, and Installed BitDefender. Then didn't like BitDefender and had just downloaded a trial version of CA Internet Security when the PC crashed

If you don't have a backup, consider them lost... If you are lucky you'll be able to get them back, but don't count on it.

Best bet right now is to remove the hard drive, and add it as a 'slave' drive to another (friends) computer & try to access the hard drive to get off stuff you want.

If You have a XP CD w/sp2, can you do a repair install without losing info on your pc? I can't remember how repair works as I haven't done it for some time.

If you have data you want recovered, then definitely do what Arie suggests first before trying to repair your HD. If you can't get the data off, then you have no choice but to try repairing it to make it best again or just enough to allow you to get the data off.

Thanks! I'll give Arie's suggestion a go as I can't run the recovery CD that came with the PC, it doesn't pick it up. I have 2 years of Baby photo's on there and REALLY want to get them back.
