When trying to boot up laptop I am being asked to insert windows cd but I do not have one. The opening screen says it could be a hardware problem. I cannot even get into safe mode

Maybe something has changed in the BIOS (startup configuration settings). Go into the BIOS at startup and choose to reset to the default settings. If you are not sure what to look for, it will be in the User Guide/manual. If you don't have the manual handy, it would be available for download from the manufacturer's website. (It might talk about resetting by removing the power connector and battery, then holding down the power-on button for 30 seconds or more.)

You should tell us what happened, what (error) messages did you get?

If you are stuck, check the suggestions I made in those threads. Ask the laptop manufacturers. Go to their website, then to Support, look up how to contact them with your question.

They set up the system! Why does it ask for a system disk when you don't have one?

You will need to give them much more information than you have supplied here... I am not upset, but you have only supplied three sentences of information.

PS If you missed it, did you see my last post, #4.

Yes your last suggestion was tried but that did not work. This computer is my friends and unfortunately we have to relay everything over the phone. I think she should have made a recovery disc herself but did not do so.

The screen that is coming up says windows boot manager

windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the probem; 1 to insert your windows installation disc and restart your comp. 2 Choose you r language settings, and then click next. 3 click repair your computer.

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \boot\BCD

    status: 0xc000000f

info an error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data

This seems about the best suggestion if you want to try wrestling with it
    http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Repairing+the+Windows+Vista+Bootloader

You can try running the Vista installation disk as though you were doing a full installation, see if offers to "repair the current installation of Windows ".

If you want to back up and reformat, I would use the manufacturer's installation system. You probably won't be able to get all the proper drivers if you try installing a fresh system with the disk.
