    Hi,

I was using my computer yesterday and it performed an automatic update for Windows Vista. After the update, my computer restarted as usual, but then would not completely boot up.

Now when I turn it on, I receive one of two different black screens. One screen gives me the option of Fix the Problems (Recommended) or Start Windows Normally. The other screen gives me the option of starting the computer in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

When I select the option "Start Windows Normallyâ€, the screen appears black, and then numbers and letters appear and finally freeze at: "!! 0xc01a001d !! 37774/95037 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\winners\x86...)." And that’s when I restart it again.

When I select the option "Fix the Problems (Recommended)," a box pops up and scans the computer for problems. When it’s finished, the evaluation says the following:
Startup repair cannot repair the computer automatically.
    Problem Signature:
    Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
    Problem Signature 01: AutoFailover
    Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6001.18000
    Problem Signature 03: 6
    Problem Signature 04: 262147
    Problem Signature 05: BadDriver
    Problem Signature 06: BadDriver
    Problem Signature 07: 0
    Problem Signature 08: 3
    Problem Signature 09: WrpRepair
    Problem Signature 10: 10
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033

Somehow I was able to get to the System Restore option, and tried that as well, but with no luck. The message on the computer said "Finalizing System Restoreâ€, but after 3 hours I assumed it froze so I restarted my computer. I’ve performed System Restores before and don’t remember it ever taking so long.

The last thing I tried was inserting the Recovery and Applications/Drivers CD, but since I have not backed up my files (and I’m kicking myself for it), I do not want to recover my system and lose everything on my computer.

I don’t understand how installing a simple Windows Vista Update messed up my computer so much.

    Please help!

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

My main suggestion would be that you go back to System Restore, look for other restore points and try those. Run the restore overnight if you have to.

Did you see "Last known good configuration" in the selections? Try that if it is there.

Disconnect any "devices" that may be plugged in.

The problem appears to be drivers. If you have installed Service Pack 2, you may have needed to find updated drivers from the system manufacturer before installing SP2.

If your only option is to "reimage ", my method would be to get an external enclosure for the HDD. If the computer has e-SATA, I would get one that has both USB and e-SATA. Put the HDD in the enclosure and connect it to another computer (preferably Vista OS), and back up the data from there. Put the HDD back in your computer and reimage, then you can buy another HDD to put into the enclosure and use that for backing up.

I might choose the last option very quickly, because I don't like the thought of having a system where it might happen again or may not be completely stable.

    Matt
PS Pls look at adding your system specs to your profile

a little hard at the moment, but try to put in as much detail as you can.
