Evan and all, If I didn't get my point across before, I will explain again. I have a small business where I take and edit video, film, photo, slides, etc for clients. When I record the programs to dvd, I used Media Player to confirm that they play OK. I know there are other players out there, but most of my clients, both private and business, are using either Vista or XP. Both of these have Media Player. If my program plays in my copy of VLC, I can't be sure it will play in a clients Media Player. In over 20 years, the only dvd I ever got back was the one with peanut butter and jelly on it - not kidding.
Anyway, I had a deadline coming up, so last night I went to MS tech support and had a chat with Milo. He went thru my system and confirmed the problem had something to do with permissions not being granted. Don't remember the exact wording, but it had something to do with the new software and new mobo combo. He ran some scans in DOS mode, which didn't look familiar, then made some changes in the registry. Now all is good, Media Player is back and all libraries are still in tact.
Thanks to all for offering help. Will mark this as resolved again

    Lynn

Glad you were able to get your problem resolved. Thanks for letting me know. :)

You should reinstall the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard if you uninstalled it as that codec pack will allow Windows Media Player 11 to play most audio and video file types without any problems.

Glad you got it all worked out, however another simple fix to tide you over would have been for your clients to also install VLC. Having two programs is often prudent in my experience.

Good luck and thank you for letting us know.

    best regards,
