    Hi MicroSardine,

To look at the startups, read this thread and run your stuff thru the data bases: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

Picking up on SFD2's idea of bare bones, what you can try to do is disable programs one at a time, disable one, then go on to the next, picking another program to disable, and so on.

    Regards - Charles

If this has already mentioned then I missed it.

You may need to re-install Windows Media Player and make sure it is set as Default player for all extentions.

Then make sure you have the latest System Restore point ( after WMP install ) and then do a MANUAL run of Regedit and search for Quicktime and delete all references to it.

Or something like RegSeeker may help clean the reg. I do not have it or I would put up a link to it.

But as a Friendly piece of advice.

Once you do get rid of the problem with Quicktime make sure you shutdown and restart System Restore. Other wise you could inadvertantly put the problem right back. ( experience speaking here )

It just came back to me about your comment regarding the xvid.dll file.

Try removing it from the system32 folder - in fact, the easy way is send it to the recycle Bin for temporary storage. Let's see if that is involved somehow. You can easily restore it from the Bin if no help.

Also, here's a link to RegSeeker It's a good tool for searching and deleting unwanted Registry junk, as has been said by BillyBob. It's free and stands alone by merely installing into its own folder.

one other thing to mention here is Arie's writeup of how to troubleshoot explorer crashes: Troubleshooting Windows Explorer Errors

Explorer is crashing, in what looks to be the XdiV code. This means you probably have a shell extension that is trying to manipulate video files when you browse into a folder that has video content. My guess is that if you follow the advice from the article referenced above, you can just shut off the buggy shell extension and go on your way.
