Hey new to this forum and for that matter new to this site so i hope this
works :). Anyways here it goes, the last couple of days for no reason that i know of i have been getting the pop up Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. At the bottom it has the option of send or don't send to Microsoft so i click dont send and as soon as I do that all of my icons disappeared from my desktop. So i shut down and restart, again after startup is complete it pops up again!, So i do a full system scan with PC Tools Registry mechanic and Spybot and AVG Anti Virus and it seems to have done the trick but instead of popping up every say 5-10 mins it now pops up say every so often and instead of all of my icons dissappearing where I can not do anything other than to manually restart, they dissappear for a second or two and all is good until the next time when it pops up. I even tried system restore to couple of weeks back and it would not let me do it.

So now that I have that brief explanation out of the way does anyone know how to fix this problem I really do not want to reformat if i don't have too (which is my absolutely last resort).

Thanks to all for your help and sorry for the long description

    Welcome to BBS,

First quick check that can be done is to click start>run, and type scf /scannow in the box and press enter. Your win XP disc may be needed (if you have one).

This should repair any damaged files in the system.

Next step would be to go to the Virus and Malware forum, download the scanner and post the results. This should find any infections that your own scanners might have missed.

You can also run a repair installation of Win XP which will leave all your software and personal files intact.

Make sure you have backed up all your important files before you do anything else, just incase:).

    Run Error Checking (CHKDSK).
Don't "crash out" of CHKDSK if it seems to have stalled, it will be trying to repair errors.

Check through the log/readout when it is finished, for if it talks about repairing errors.

Hi Melingas1, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

In addition to trying what other members have suggested take a look here, Troubleshooting Windows Explorer Errors.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.
