I'll give it a try, Nortons is scheduled to run once a week and it does.
Also, I had Microsoft Antispyware proir to Defender and it worked properly, including the automatic scan.

In fact I can reinstall Antispy and it WILL auto scan. This is why this problen is so strange.

Anyway thanks for the replies, I'll let you know whats going on.

And once again the machine has won, it did not scan.

I still think it has to do with the Run AS line. I think it has to say NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. But for one reason or another I cannot change it.

I'll have to do some serious research this weekend

Check out this artical from MS...
    Error 0x80070005

Make sure you read the "more information" towards the bottom of the page, also says it has to do with XP pro.

Looks like you may have to set a password ??

PeteC please look at this too. and give your opinion on it.

Thats the exact error and word for word thats whats in the log.

You found it, thanks. I knew that we could beat the machine. We are still superior. (but I had my doubts there for a whole minute.) I have a few things I have to get done this morning, then I'll tackle this.

    Thanks again, ya'll are great.:)

Bummer, I dont think I can get the Hot Fix for the problem. My version of XP Pro is an OEM (Dell) and not a retail. So Microsoft doesnt have to help me. Bummer

I think I can do the Workaround solution but I think I need more info. Maybe someone can help. I know I have to log on as administrator (no problem) I have to have a Windows Password set (done), but what new user or group do I put in??

Go to control panel, Administrative tools, Services. scroll down to windows defender. under "start up type" does it say automatic? or manual?

If manual, right click, seclect properties, change the startup type to automatic. Also check the "log on" tab. Is the "local system account" checked?

I like persistant people, it shows character. It is on automatic and local system accout is checked.

I got a response from Microsoft, because my Windows XP is an OEM Version (Dell Supplied with my Computer) they do not have to provide support. A Fix is available to those with a retail version. (I have to see if any one I know has a retail version).

I might just run manual scans everyother day or something

I Have Not Given UP I WILL BE VICTORIOUS in the end:)
