I've searched around before posting but couldn't solve it, one of the solutions, changing the policies tab to quick removal is greyed out.

Guessing you're trying to remove a flash drive?

Rebooting or shutting down would do the trick.

You always want to make sure that ALL applications like Win Explorer are open... If the drive has music on it - make certain that the music app is closed.

You could reboot - then try the Quick Removal option and see if it'll let you make the change.

Yes, make certain that there are no programs trying to access the drive.

One I sometimes suspect is the antivirus.

I also dislike doing a reboot/restart, I put the computer into sleep mode or hibernation and remove the drive then.
