Thanks mccoady, nice to hear the good news.

Not everyone posts back the way you have, so we appreciate it when it happens :)

I'm back! It seems I still have a small issue and I'm not sure if this will require me to start all over searching and deleting ZA and reinstalling but here's the deal. ZA loaded fine for a couple of reboots and then I decided to uninstall the Startup Delayer program that started this whole mess. I uninstalled it from Add/Remove and it looked like it unistalled fine but it left it's desktop icon but it was not a completed file so I wanted to delete it and it said it was only a shortcut and to go to add/remove but it does not show up in Add/Remove now. Now ZA is working but it is not loading as a icon on startup nor is it showing up in Programs, it is checked in Msconfig to load on startup and Windows Security Center does show a firewall is on and it is ZA (Windows firewall is off). It is also not loading as a icon when logging in under my wife's user account but I believe it is in her programs or was.

I have a feeling this started happening when I tried to ininstall Startup delayer. Since Startup delayer is not showing up in add/remove is there any way to remove it or what it left behind?

And since ZA is not listing an icon to show that it is loading (but it actually is) is this something I should be concerned about, I really wish it did? If the icon is not going to appear is there a way to have an shortcut on my desk top since it's not appearing in my Programs?

    Hi mccoady,

What you should have done was go into StartupDelayer and had it return all of its programs that it starts for you to the standard windows startup folders. StatupDelayer uses its own startup folders and thats where ZA is.

Try this, at this point, re install StartupDelayer and then go thru disabling all its startups which should return ZA's startup to the standard windows startup folders.

It might be the case that the startupDelayer re install will start fresh, meaning it will erase its old files. In that case, ZA should start from its normal location.

After you've established that StartupDelayer is not starting any application, then uninstall it.

    Regards - Charles

Actually that's what I thought I had did, I think SD has a problem wanting to give back control. I tried what you said and had it control both PC-cillin and ZA and they worked while Windows loaded everything else and everthing loaded okay. I then had SD give back Windows control of PC-cillin and ZA, then uninstalled it and rebooted. Now Windows loads those two programs but not my Spy Sweeper, Any Dvd or Mailwasher so don't know what gives. I have an idea if I installed SD again and had it control some or all of my programs it would work but I was trying to get away from it.

I still would like to know why ZA doesn't show up in my programs while it does in my wifes. Also now PC-cillin is not loading the icon in her tray but it is in mine even though it's working. I guess if I have to I can uninstall and reinstall all of the programs that have icons loading and hope it all straightens out unless you have anymore ideas. The reason I orginally tried SD was because sometimes some of the icons wouldn't load like they were getting bumped off.

I'm going to be gone tonight and all day on Wednesday so it will be Thursday before I can continue with this.

    Hi mccoady,

Sounds to me like the problem isn't SD. I understand that by what you're writing that the use of SD solves the symptoms of the original problem.

    What comes to mind is:

Re install SD and give it control of not ZA or the AV (BTW, the PC-cillin version you're using is the AV only, correct?), but something else. Or not give it anything to control and see what happens.

Or disable the programs you mention, and start them up one by one and see the effects. Keep them from starting up either thru the program's option if there is one (ZA can be disabled from starting up thru its own control panel) or use msconfig.

I think your original problem is a conflict among the applications you mention. And if thats the case, chances are one of them is the culprit.

Your multi user problems I can't speak to, I have a single user system and don't have much experience with multi user systems.

    Regards - Charles

mccoady--I was not aware that StartupDelayer was as complicated as it apparently is. I am not sure it sounds worth the trouble. Most of the time Windows, itself, handles the timing for starting programs pretty well.
And it is not clear to me why you and and your wife are having different experiences concerning ZoneAlarm.
Specific to ZoneAlarm, turn on its Control Center. Click Overview in the left panel, then click the Preferences tab. Are the boxes "Load ZoneAlarm at startup" and "Protect the ZoneAlarm client" checked? If not check them.
