Information about backing up the registry:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/

Backing up information is at the start. You could do both methods. Read through the whole thing, it will tell you about the parts of the registry.

Will post back later today with a little more.

You can backup and explore without making changes.

It doesn't have to be real scary if you are following suggestions from MS. Your whole (operating) system may be in a bad way if the MS suggestions did not work. I don't edit the registry if I can help it, otherwise, I look for the most reputable suggestions for doing so. MS is the most reputable source for editing Windows registry :)

The thing to watch for is that you are in the location specified. If you follow the path specified and things do not look "right ", stop, and try again. Even if it seems I am in the right location, I will "back out" and make certain that the "branches" I have opened are the correct ones. If you go to the location specified and "things" don't look as they should, back out or start again (close Regedit and start over).

Double-check spelling and spaces for any adjustments.

You should not have any major dramas with resetting the floppy "filters ". Even corrupting those should not make your system unworkable. You would be able to boot back into Windows and "import" the backup.

Scary?...a moto of mine...you won't know if you don't try. Backup and you should be able to try just about anything (this answer would not be here otherwise :D )

Thanks Matt, I will have a go at it over the weekend.

Before attempting the following make sure you read and understand Registry Editing Warning.
    1. Press WinKey + R to bring up the Run... dialog
    2. Type regedit
    3. Press the Enter key
    4. In the Registry Editor navigate to this section of the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    5. In the right pane right-click and delete the entry "UpperFilters"
    6. Then again, in the right pane right-click and delete the entry "LowerFilters"
    7. Close the registry editor
    8. Reboot

    sounds easy

See, not so scary after all :D

I've seen a few of those "Delete the Filters" registry hacks(?) suggested by MS and most I think were aimed at basic hardware like floppy and optical drives. People like you and I get uncomfortable working in "delicate" places such as the registry so I wonder if Vista is going to have easier ways to reset hardware? The filters seem to be getting blocked up ocassionally in XP  .

You traced the solution and did the "surgery ". Give yourself a "thanks" :)

Hi Matt, thanks:D I am a bit confused though, MS are pointing to Upperfilter and Lowerfilter but I only had one upper no lower and I had a look in a fully working setup and that had none no upper and no lower.
Does that mean that those Filters only show up when things are wrong   Like you said will Vista bring good news??
