    Stitch,

Getting Ready to Format and Install Windows

Insert windows boot disk and reboot.

When the start up menu is displayed select "Start computer without CD-Rom support.

    At A:\ type Fdisk (enter).

At next prompt "Do you wish to enable large disk support(Y/N)?

Select "Y" for large disk support.

After you hit enter, the Fdisk options menu is displayed. Press 1 to create a DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive, then (Enter)

Press 1 to create a Primary DOS partition (Enter)

After last command you will recieve this prompt:
"Do you wish to use the maximum available size for primary DOS partition? (Y) (Enter)

You then get a message "You must reboot for settings to take effect "
CNTL, ALT, DEL and let reboot. (with the floppy still in) when reboot is done
chose "Start up without CD-Rom Support "

    Formatting:

after system is rebooted at the A:\ prompt type " format C: " (with out the " ")
You will then see the message " WARNING, ALL DATA WILL BE LOST" PRESS " y "

After formatting is dont you can enter a name for the drive at the lower right hand corner of the screen or leave blank and name later.

Reboot CNTL, ALT, DEL (with the floppy still in) this time when reboot is done choose
"Start up with CD-Rom Support "

At this point after reboot I like to make a directory to copy all files needed from Windows CD to install from HDD. This way my CD is in safe place never to be damaged. If you would like to do this you can at this point:

Insert CD into CD-Rom Drive and at the A:\ type MD C:\Win98 and hit (Enter)

Then type Copy E:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98 (Enter)
Once the files are done copying from the A:\ prompt type C:

Now you are at the C: prompt and have 2 choices, you can either reboot with the CD-Rom in and let install from the CD-Rom drive or you can put it away and run the Directory you just made and install from there.

To install from C: type CD C:\win98 (Enter)
    then again type Setup (Enter)

And your off to the races Windows should be installing now

Note: These instructions are for FAT32 System

    post back if problems

    Regards,
    FireDancer

    Great!!!

    Now we're motoring :D

Select Start with CD Rom support

Follow the screen and note which drive letter has been assigned to your CD Rom Drive say D

At the A: prompt type D: > Enter
You should now have the D: prompt
Put the Win 98 CD into the drive
At the D: prompt type setup > Enter and Windows should start to load.

    Keep us posted :)

FireDancer - we're crossing lines, but no matter :) - We'll get this sorted.

Select choice 3 - Delete Partition or ................

Hit 3 on the keyboard > enter

Then - What drive do you want to delete - C I guess > enter

Then create a new dos partition using the whole disk and when done type 'format C:' at the prompt

I'm living dangerously here on my other PC trying this out - a long time since I used fdisk, etc, but no matter, it's only a development PC - and if I go too far - tough :D

hard drive reformated and now have put cd rom in decided i would take advice and copy disk to HDD for safe keeping but i typed in as follows
    at A:\>MD C:\Win98
    A:\>Copy E:\Win98\*.*C:Win98
it came up with file not found - E:\Win98*.*C
    o file(s) copied
it also says diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive E so i presume i am coping from E:D

Your CD Rom drive is likely to be D: - When you booted from the floppy with CD support the screen told you the letter of the CD Rom drive.

Note - you must type the command in so:
"Copy E:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98" substututing E with D or whatever the CD drive letter is - no '>'. (no quotes)

Second thoughts - you can always copy the install CD to the PC later.

It may be simpler now to boot to the A: prompt with CD support
At the A: prompt type D: and hit Enter and at the D: prompt, with the CD in the drive type setup and hit enter and let Windows install.

If D: doesn't work try E: or F:, but it does say on the final screen to the A: prompt.

    To clarify this...........

When you boot with CD Rom support on the final screen with the A: prompt you should see:

    MSCDEX Version .....
    Copyright ................
    Drive X: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0

'X' is the letter of the CD Rom Drive

    Copy E:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98 - there is a space between * and C

put in d at the a prompt and set up at the d prompt
it asked me to make a back up of some description on a blue screen asked me to put a blank floppy in a drive. quit that and now it says setup found errors on your hard disk
you must repair these errors befor continuing with set up. for more info se SETUP.TXT on setup disk 1 or the windows CD-ROM. Press any key to quit set up
. did that and the D prompt appeared Put in F like pete sait then tried setup at the f prompt now it says CDR101: Not ready reading drive F
    Abort, Retry, Fail?

D: is clearly your CD Rom drive

Found my Win 98SE CD - this is what it says in setup.txt for disk errors:

If you are setting up from a CD, insert the CD, and
    then type the following:

    d:\win98\scandisk.exe /all

where "d" is the drive that contains the CD.

So go back to the D: prompt and type in that command:
d:\win98\scandisk.exe /all and let scandisk fix the errors.

When that's done, back to the d: prompt - type setup and enter - and pray?

The floppy was probably a start up disk.
