That's all I needed to download Classic Shell. So many people are raving about it, and I went to their web site and looked at the screen shots.

    I'm sold.

Thanks, all, for your information and recommendations.

    Cheers!

8.1 is a joke. keeps uninstalling printers but I can still use my registry hacks that I have been using for quite some time. I've been swapping HDDs one has win 8.1 and the other has win 7 ultimate. You can still get the god mode control panel and create restart and shutdown buttons and pin them the task bar in win 8. Also created context menu items Copy To, Move To, Defragment and Disk Cleanup. As far as I am concerned the jury is still out on windows 8 but I'm going to keep goofing with.

Are you trying to install a shared printer? I had this issue with Windows 7 Pro where after installing a shared printer from a networked computer it would forget the printer existed after rebooting. The only way I was able to get around this was to join the to computers to a homegroup. (Not ideal but I was sick and tired so I said whatever and went with it)

I would assume windows 8 would have the same issues. It may be worth a shot

They're already networked. I'll Delete that MS account and use my bbs account and see what happens.

Just booted into 8 after I got my 7 updates to see what was there for 8. One of the optional was 8.1. Didn't take it. Will wait a couple of weeks. I had the FREE upgrade from 8 Pro to Media Center. Wonder what this will do with the Media Center? 13 others available for 8 and there were 19 for 7. Reboot required for both.

Are you sure ? Win 8.1 is not scheduled to be available to general public till October middle.

I think what you are getting is a pre requisite update for Win 8.1

    Media Center for 8 Pro

    Hey, Mr. Bill.

Microsoft was mean to me :(

Their new Media Center seems a cruel joke.

Although I rarely used the previous Media Center, other than to view video files, this one is more resource intensive for little return. I don't know what the big deal is and why they made it appear as if they were giving us a free version of something really useful.

Not sure what I'm missing here ...

    Cheers!

    Win 8.1 Update/Upgrade

I've actually got about 24 updates waiting to be installed. All of your list and many more, related to Office 2010 and 2007 - my Sharepoint Designer is '07 - and I'm about to update now.

I finally downloaded and installed Classic Shell and couldn't be more pleased so far. I'd been using a Taskbar menu that Arie had posted a while back, which was really excellent for a minimalistic approach. But I am pleased with the one from Classic Shell and don't see that 8.1 will give me anything more useful.

    Cheers!
