I am not sure if the task manager would show anything running via the command prompt.

    Glad it worked out.

Took some time to install, but no issues so far. Desktop and notebook, Windows 7 Professional. x64 both. Let us pray!

All these post and there are other Message Boards that have lots of people installing it and no problems. Take the plunge.

It may be, but still there are some caveats.

Nice to see articles written by clueless people!

You can only have hotfixes installed if you have asked for them in the 1st place, and secondly all 3 that he listed apply to Windows Server 2008, not to Windows 7.

Now there is a good possibility you can find hotfixes that apply to Windows 7, but again, most (if not all) are only available on request, so people who installed them would know.

I installed SP1 from the downloaded file "windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe ". There was/is an "entry" to remove Service Pack Backup Files but the size was reported as 0 (zero) kB. Is there a connection with System Restore (or whatever it's called in Windows 7) which I have disabled?

I'm pretty sure there is! I'd never disable System Restore, it limits your recoverability options.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. Since I use Ghost for system backup, I don't need "additional" recoverability options.

I know you use Ghost. Just wanted to make sure casual readers would know :)

SR can be a quick recovery from a failed Windows Update.

Yes, System Restore is there for people who don't have a "recovery strategy" of their own. I have an old Toshiba Satellite LapTop that I use to update and transfer files to and from flight computers in gliders. On that one, System Restore is enabled on its single partition.

Well, I think what Arie is saying is recovery strategy or no recovery strategy, it's not a bad idea to keep system restore.

I have images of my drives but still keep system restore running. Although I've never ran into a problem using any of the drive imaging programs I've used over the years, if I have a problem, I'll always go to system restore first every time. If that doesn't do it, then go to the image. My thinking is, if something goes wrong with an image, you're going to have way more problems than if a system restore point happens to not fix the issue. I'll go the less intrusive route first, every time.

That said, back to the subject. :) FWIW, I did end up installing SP1. I said I had no issues but I had forgot about the fact that I kept losing one of my SATA drives when this computer went to sleep. Got reminded last week after this puter had been in sleep mode. I remembered a while back seeing a hotfix available for it. So, installed SP1 (was assuming the hotfix would be in it) and haven't had a problem with it since. Crossing my fingers but I'm guessing it's fixed (hopefully anyway). The computer has been in sleep mode many times since I installed it without any problems when I woke it. So, guess I was wrong to sit on it.

It's installed on the others too now. :)

When Windows Update installed SP1 on my Dell laptop with factory-installed Win 7, I got a message on my screen that "This copy of Windows is not genuine." Uninstalling the SP got rid of the message, and everything still works. I changed the update settings to notify only and installed a Defender update today, so MS apparently still agrees my copy is legal. Dell support gave me a link to validate, and it produced an error message indicating that it did not recognize the OS! Any suggestions?

As a side note, I have installed SP1 twice from the downloaded file "windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe" on the system in my specs.

The first time, I just installed it on top of "everything ", no preparation. It took 36 minutes until the computer was back up running after reboot.

The second time, I prepared the system by rolling back to the most recent Ghost Image of a clean system. SP1 was installed in 24 minutes.

I dual boot WinXP and Win7. WinXP is the "main OS" since I have software that don't run well on Win7. Win7 had not been used very much since the Image was created and I'm surprized by the difference of 33 % between the two installations.

You'll have to sort it out with Dell, can't help you there.

since it keeps telling me I haven't posted since I joined I'll add my 2 cents. Wife's computer G72gx only windows 7 computer we have, installed SP1 in under 30 minutes. not much on it though, office 2007 and thats about it. When i defrag I do turn off sys restore and then turn it back on. For backups i also clone drives or create an image. I use Acronis., Of course important data is backed up by several methods and multiple locations

lol i thought lets install this little sp1 patch but ..... no go sp1 don't want to install on my w7 ultimate, i still have not found a solution why it does not want to install yet.

But clearly ms does not know a solution either since the release of the beta :D

I have never used system restore succesfully from 10 tries 8 failed and after checking the so called restored systems still had issues with other programs or the so called succesfull restore missed some data.
So i have turned off system restore completely and now use windows home server which makes a daily backup of all my machines, this far this is a much more reliable way of securing your precious system and data.
Before i build a homeserver i ran a backup machine which made daily backups in almost the same way as the homeserver does, but this homeserver has handy goodies which make it a superb solution.
It contains now all my documents, movies, photo's and music from every system which is allowed to access it anywhere on the planet
