Well, I've never been one to shy away from these things. In fact, I'm usually one of the first ones to jump in and do it. Not sure about this one though. I'm downloading it now but don't know if I'll install it or not. My computers are all up to date. Haven't had an ounce of trouble with any of them.

If this update doesn't offer any performance gains or anything different in the UI, new programs or whatever; what's the point to updating for a guy like me other than having the latest greatest? Seems like kind of a ho hum thing to me. I suppose I'll do it eventually but I think I'll sit on this one for a while.

My thoughts precisely. Since Microsoft itself has acknowledged that this is just a rollup of security patches with just 2 little things added on, I don't see why anyone should bother about it.

But may be in future Microsoft may make SP1 mandatory for patches to be installed then it would be necessary to install it. Till then I would sleep over it.

Was in my updates today from MS but not checked like the other 2 were. I checked it and downloaded it with the other 2 and no problems so far. Was going to watch how long on the download, but had to leave the house and when I came back. it was waiting for a reboot. I was gone about 30 minutes. No problems so far.

What is the source of that info? IE 9 RC runs fine without SP1.

Service Packs are supposed to be ho hum. It was Microsoft's fault for introducing new features in service packs in the past.

Now, if you go through the documents you'll see that SP1 include a lot of hotfixes, which you will not have on your system.

Hotfixes are only made available on request when you encounter a specific problem, and are integrated in a Service Pack when they have passed all testing.

So it is still useful to install the Service Pack, it will reduce your risk of running into 'known' issues that have been fixed.

Time will tell. The article to which you refer was written before the last decision because SP1 did not have a release date at the time of publication.

I still feel that SP1 should be installed. Using Windows Update does cut down the download. I have now done 6 computers, (32-bit and 64-bit) with nary a problem.

What do all the "other" files do? The ones with the symbols, i mean...

I installed sp1 and my sys seems a tad slower than before (could be just me) but install went ok, no problems.

Full C drive backup shows a larger size (9,398,516 vs 8,585,902)
    after installing,being required.

I deleted the 'old' files and got back ~ i gig. Of course I can no longer uninstall SP1.

I ran, from an elevated command prompt, the following:
    DISM.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /spsuperseded

I did Win 7 64 bit SP1 on five machines, four Home Premium (i3, i5, and 2 i7's) and on Professional on my new netbook, Atom 450 but 2 gigs of DRAM. I did it round robin so to speak. There was no noticeable difference between the netbook and even the i7-920. I did not really watched the clock, I just kept on working on stuff on machines that had finished. In each case, download and install with other updates which came at the same time took maybe ten minutes.

I installed SP1 on my netbook. That took 1 hr 20mins and 40 mins on my PC.
So far no issues on either.

I installed SP1 on my desktop 64bit and did have a couple of issues. One being that when I tried to install some updates for other programs I would get a dialog box that told me "Windows Installer could not be accessed ". Another issue was that when I tried to use Windows media player I got another dialog box, hopefully I will be able to insert it here. I don't see how I can do that so I will see if I can copy the text and paste it here. Couldn't figure how to paste on this site. so copied it by hand. Dialog box much nicer looking.

The file wmploc.dll has a version number of 12.0.
    7600.16667 where 12.0.7601.17514 was expected.

Windows media player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled.

Do you want to install the player from the microsoft web site.
Yes or no. I answered yes and was taken to the site but unsure which to install, tried one but then got the first problem at the beginning of this thread. Uninstalled SP1 and now everything is working correctly again. I have no knowledge why this happened but will wait to retry it again. Maybe some one can find the answer for us.

You can clean up the installation files through Disk Cleanup. Click the button Clean up system files and you can remove the Service Pack Backup Files.

Or you could use the command that sunrisecc posted ;)

Just for the record, my information was gleaned from the MS SP1 deployment guide.

I ran it at an elevated command prompt and it returned to the command prompt upon completion. It can take up to 15 minutes to complete. Mine took 10 minutes.
