The problems first started with Outlook when it stopped showing the most recent messages and then it completely stopped functioning.

In addition, the instant search available to search documents seems to be also disabled.

How should I proceed to have it functioning again ?

As information I used the Windows 7 premium home edition.

Well, it all started when I began searching for a message which had been received some two weeks ago from a definite sender. I entered his name and was given a list of all the messages received from this person except those received during the past month (approximately) were missing. As this had been going on for a while, I decided to try to remedy the problem as best as I could...
I then found out that none the messages were shown and that I had a message saying that no match could be found and that the items were still being indexed. I tried to have this done via Tools, but it never progressed and kept showing that 0 item had been indexed.
Out of curiosity I then went to the general instant search option (clicking on the little round icon at the bottom left hand corner of the screen). I do get some results but I know that they are only partial and strangely enough in this case what is indexed are fairly recent documents...
Sorry for being so lengthy. I hope that my explanations are clear enough for you to try to find a solution... Kindly note that my computer knwoledge is fair as far as set ups are concerned... but I am willing to try in order to solve this problem whic is really annoying since I find the instant search function very practical.

You still have not told me what version of Outlook you are using but I assume it is 2007.

This link is fairly lengthy but relates to missing emails so should correct the problem.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287497

The only other option is to uninstall and reinstall Outlook.

There is also a possibility that the errors you have are due to a virus or malware infection.

I finally manaaged to have the instant search function in Outlok operating again by... removing all folders in the "Search Options ". A bit crazy, but it works.

As far as the Documents and files search, the link given is a bit too complicated for me and I have transferred it to the IT technician who is also looking at the matter. I shall keep you informed.

Many thanks for your valuable help.

    Windows 7 - Instant Search - Status

Please be patient to see further information on this subject since, so far unfortunately the problems have not yet been solved. The "repair" with Outlook Instant Search is only partial since it will not search in the directory.

As far as the documents/files search is concerned, I managed to obtain from HP two DVD for recovery, but to use them I will need the help of the IT technician from the shop where I bought the PC. Because of the forthcoming holidays, we postponed this work to be done in the new year.

It should be noted that my (HP ProBook 4710s) PC can still be considered as new since I purchased it in May 2010. Windows 7 was preinstalled... Therefore, Microsoft won't help and strangely enough HP does not include this model in their on-line help... I have again tried to write to them, but so far no response.:mad::mad:I will not give up !

I will give further news when everything is finally solved. Thank you for your understanding.

    Windows 7 - Instant Search

I live in Switzerland and cannot see myself calling a number in the United States !

I did try to call the Swiss number and this is how I finally managed to get the two DVDs, but took me ages to finally end up talking to someone in... Tunisia !

Also, I am almost certain that if I call the US number, I will have to go through numerous "Press X, press Y, etc." to finish hearing that I should contact someone where I live.

Anyway, many thansk for the tip.

These recovery discs can by used without a technician, we can help you if there is anything you do not understand.

This is the link for your PC.

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...d=3935157&submit.y=7&submit.x=7&lang=en&cc=us

Your Notebook has a recovery tool built in which allows you to make your own recovery discs. A guide for this would have been in your instruction manual.

On this following link is a guide for using the recovery discs, scroll down the page to a list in large bold type. Click on Recovering from the recovery discs and this will give you detailed instructions to use the disks to return you notebook back to it's factory settings.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00608578&product=18703#N944

Use a recovery option that includes a format, I suggest this as I think there is a chance that your notebook is infected with a virus, a format will destroy any infections on the hard drive.

Windows 7 - Instan Search - Follow Up

Many thanks to those who gave me very valuable guidelines. However, as previously indicated, since they are a little bit too complicated for my level of competence in the matter, I have pursued the idea of obtaining help from HP... Finally their system did recognize my PC and I was provided a temporary link to a Microsoft "hotfix" which I tried to follow. Unfortuantely, it had all kinds of warnings, etc. One point, however, retained my attention : it would seem that a Service Pack 2 will soon be published (however no date given as to approximaely when).

Apparently this Service Pack 2 will solve all my problems... Therefore, I prefer to wait...

Therefore, many thanks to everyone who gracioiusly provided help ! I wish everyone a very happy New Yeear.... free of any computer bug !!!:):)

OK, Bucovina, sorry we could not help you to resolve this problem.

SP1 Beta was only released in June 2010 so you may have a long wait for SP2.

I am sure we can help you to cure this error if you wish to proceed, but maybe the easiest thing for you to do is a complete reinstallation with your recovery discs.

As I said in my last post there is a possibility that this problem was caused by a virus infection which if not rectified, by removal or a full reformat of the hard drive and reinstallation with the recovery discs, could cause you further problems.

Hope you had a good Christmas and Happy New Year.

Markmadras, Firstr of all Happy New Year and many thanks for your various attempts to help me.
As the Outlook Instant Search again stopped functioning, I checked this site and found that you had given me further instructions. Again many thanks.
As infomation, I was finally able to get some kind of support from HP which suddenly included my PC in their prgram. Through them I received a hotfix link from Microsoft with all kinds of warnings... and of course I was afraid to give t a try. Additionally, one of the suggestions was to wait for the next Service Pack to come out. This should be in the first part of the year.
I hope to soon be able to check with the technician at the shop where I purchased my PC what can be done. As previously indicated, I would prefer if this could be done without having to re-install my PC.
