As the screenshot (http://gyazo.com/b08eb4b72841a969a5d4bdf48ba7a0ae) shows, the Windows 7 Action Center says that my avast! antivirus is turned off and that my system is unprotected, while the avast! tray icon shows that it is turned on and my "system is secured. "

Clicking on the Turn on button does nothing.

How can I get the Action Center to agree with facts?

BTW, I turned Windows Defender off so as not to conflict with avast!.

Try downloading Avast over itself. If that don't work, download it to your desktop and then get off line and uninstall it, then install the one you saved. Other than that, I would say it is possible you have some malware/spyware on your PC.

Uninstalled and reinstalled avast!. No change. Ran SuperAntiSpyware, it found 1 trojan and 10 tracking cookies. I removed (quarantined) them. No change. Ran MalwareBytes Antimalware, it found 1 trojan. I remove it. No change. I'm just going to live with it. Thanks anyway.

Lets see.... The neighborhood watch told you there's a burglar in your house. Your reaction: "No problem, I will live with it ".

Your neighbors will not be happy with a known burglar living in your house!

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

    Arie,

I appreciate your comment. It's just that I've been through a number of virus hunts in the past and the last one, about 9 months ago, left my computer unbootable and I had to restore my machine from a full backup. A virus (if there was one) didn't cause the crash -- my clumsy efforts during the hunt for it did. So you might be able to understand why I'm reluctant to follow through and to "just let it be." I realize that this makes me a bad example to others and I feel bad about that. It seems that every little glitch in computers nowadays boils down to viruses or malware. I thought there might be a simple (non-virus) fix for the anomaly, but I guess not. :(

But if you've got a virus there's every chance that you'll give it to all your friends (That's if you haven't already), Not very fair is it? You owe it to them to do what Arie says.
