    No good at all.

    You wouldn't.

If I take a polaroid of a friend covered in spots and they say they don't like it so can I take another then I would be bound to say that they won't like the next one either for the same reason; being diplomatic by not mentioning that I can see that his/her face is covered in spots.

Changing video cards and drivers is a special case. I concerned myself with the general case. Here we are tryng to fault General Relativity with a Special Relativity argument.

If I know for a fact that a particular backup is bad then I'd probably get rid of it too.

What I don't do is get rid of backups that have not been proven to be bad.

The dektop is at the other side of some hot coals and my best shoes have perished. I have access to others. Some are too big and some are too small. I have a chance, though, to get to the desktop. You, my friend, in the same position may very well be standing there bare foot.

Not quite. Windows will use /opt at some point unless Optimize=0 in scanreg.ini.

I have seen a registry get smacked on a power failure. What you described is known as a brown out as opposed to a black out. It was the third brown out in one week with the reg getting smoked on the last one. A UPS was purchased pdq followed by another brown out two days later. The UPS just started to squark but it only lasted a few seconds. Windows was oblivious to the event.

Being a Brit I know only too well that our National Grid is put under intense pressure round about 4pm when we all brew up for tea and crumpets. The UPS comes into its own then!

No arguments there and I noted your earlier comment re XP. Each to their own, of course, but I'll probably get buried with SE.

    So maybe with realizing it you are saying and or agreeing to;

"The circiumstaces at the time can dictate what is done with the previous backups "

    Also another idea.

If your machine is invaded by some Virus or some other nasty thing ? Would you still keep all of the old backups ?

Or would you consider that to be another Special Circimstance ?

In both SE and XP there are some Virus cleaners that will repair/remove said Nasty from the backups rendering them now possiblely dangersous. Let alone inacurate.

There were several cases in Virus discussion about this. A virus was ( supposedly ) cleaned out of the system but another Virus check showed it still present. And it tunred out that it was still in a backup file.

I had a similiar situation with the RB00x.CAB fles. I ran repair tool from Symantec. It said that it was fixed. But the next Virus check showed it to still be present. The darn thing was sittin there " Just waiting in the Wings " for me to use that backup.

Backups were removed and the Virus indication left with them.

BTW. gammaepsilon With your last reply we are coming closer together.

HHHMMMM !!!! We are closer together than I thought. I was not altogether fond of XP. But now that I have worked ( and fought ) we are getting along better.

    No, I'm not.

    You have simply rewritten:-

to which I have already said
Nice try, but an old trick and one which I can spot a mile off!

    Re viruses:
    Yes, I would.

You can hit with me with all the special cases you like but they will not undermine the general statement.

    That is:
I can also think of some special cases.

We will agree on each and every disposal of the bath water. The main difference between us is that you, on occasion, will throw the baby out with it!

No, we aren't. That statement was off topic and therefore irrelevant.

Another old trick which I can spot a mile off.

That's two old tricks. Methinks I have you on the run, sir.

In the final anaysis my argument cannot be lost. No more than buying term life insurance and surviving. What a waste of money that was says a survivor. One widow/widower may have something very different to say.

In a former life I was a life insurance salesman. Well, a bit more than that but that is what was on my passport.

I did not win them all.

Do yourself a favour and increase your wife's MaxBackupCopies to 10.

Some folks may be undecided what to do with them but then that would be true of five.

You, like me, will have a fair idea on their worth. If that be true for five then it may be equally true for 10.

A glass of water is not worth much. Try telling that to a guy in the Sahara desert who hasn't had a drop past his/her lips for a few days.

Go on, sneak it up to 10. I sincerely hope it proves to be a waste of space. I don't need to know whether you do or not. I know some folk who did buy life insurance shortly after not buying from me. Only to be expected. We are more contrary than computers - a hell of a lot more contrary!

    NO WAY.

I am lucky if there are more than two of them.

If I have a problem that only came up today. Restoring a backup from a week ago IS NOT going to fix the problem.

Plus a backup of a week ago may well replace problems that I have alrady fixed.

And the two that are there are known to be good after making changes That prove out to be OK.

You say that I refer to SPECIAL circumstances.

Well you are absolutley correct about that.

    But they are all special circumstance that;

    1--Very often get over looked.
2--If not overlooked then put off till a later date.
3--Can be the CAUSE of unkown problems .

Not only do we need to be aware of and understand the normal circumstances but we also need to be aware of problems created by and understand the abnormal circumstances.

Maybe that is why me and Windows get along so well. I will take no nonsense from it and it will take no nonsense from me.

So now I gotta get out of this apparently useless discussion and go get my 98SE Hard Drive ( my BACKUP for this XP drive ) plugged in and get the Video changed, AV updates etc. on it too before I forget it and that occasion arises that I may need it.

    Have a nice Day

I hope that you regret typing that. If so, then no doubt we'll have another chat in the future. If not, BillyBob, then we will not which will be a shame because we both have an above average grasp of the beast in front of us.
