By now I have tried all of your suggestions including reading the article(s), I think, with no success. Still at a loss.

I notice that on both of my computers, after deleting idstore.sst it gets re-created alongwith a idstore.sst.new whenever I reboot. How can I prevent that from happening?

I can not follow your instructions re the DWORD in regedit, i.e., I do not find it in the parameters folder.

Secondly, the main thing I want to do is to share a printer and also use one computer as a back up for the other. Therefore file and computer sharing should work, forget HomeGroup. However, I can not get the two computers to see and share on my wireless home network. Can you help. I have disconnected both from my router and then re-connected with no success. I would like to be able to totally start over creating a wireless homenetwork, but don't know to do that.

Here is the rub. When I open control panel/network and Internet/Network Map I see both computers in the map connected with double dotted lines to the router which connects to the Internet with a double solid line and both computers show the identical map. When I open Windows Explorer and click on network in either computer, it shows only the computer that I am on. That I think is my problem. And that is probably why I can't establish a homegroup. When I chat with HP, they are not really trained in networking and want me to pay for their specialists.

You don't. It will get re-created. We only delete it once to make sure it didn't cache the wrong settings.

Which Win7 ed. are you using? Home Basic & Starter can't create a HomeGroup, only join.

As I said before, you should just use normal networking, forget HomeGroup!

    Arie,
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on both computers.

I have given up temporarily on HomeGroup. I want to make file and printer sharing work and can not. When I open "See full map" in the Network and Sharing Center, I have gotten three different results; one result was the double dotted lines from each computer to the router and then double solid lines to the Internet. Another was double solid lines from the computer that I was on to a "unknown ?" device and from there the double solid lines to the router and the other computer had double dotted lines to the router, and the third result was that "Windows cannot discover any computer or device." (Would you like wine instead?) Actually there is a fourth result, I opened "See full map" on the other computer, I got a map showing only the computer I was using and not the other one, and it had double dotted lines to the router and double solid lines to the Internet. Go figure.

    Arie,
It would have helped me if you had said that the article addressed my situation (both computers running the same, Win7 os), as well as the situation in the title. It is a very thorough article. When I tried the Microsoft Internet Connectivity Evaluation tool, it did not mention Windows 7. Should I run it on my Windows 7 machine?
I had trouble trying to replace an old .sys file for my WiFi network device because I did not have permission. How do I give myself permission to work in the winsxs subfolders?

    Yes, it will run fine.

I don't think you should be replacing files in the winsxs subfolder. Why would you want to do that?

Ok, I ran the router checker and it may be that two features are not supported (the NAT and plug n play) which might be my problem. The router is a few years old. My guess would be that it does not open IPv6. On the other hand, when I log into my router on the Internet, it tells me that plug n play is enabled.

I will not do anything in winsxs. The reason I attempted it was because I downloaded a file (.sys) from the manufacturer of one of my network adaptors which was dated June 2010 and the identical file on my computer was dated June 2009. When I tried to replace it with the newer file (of course I was following your suggestion to make sure all the network adaptor software was up to date by checking with the manufacturer, in this case Atheros), it recognized that the file already existed and asked if I wanted to replace it with the newer, larger file. So I was confident that the file was the correct one. I have asked Atheros how I can install the more recent version.

I am making progress, both computers show both computers in Windows Explorer window under Networks. Also the "See full map" shows both on both computers. When I try to share or map a network drive, I get the following "Logon failure: the user had not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" I think the "this computer" is refering to the computer I am trying to see and not the one I am on. As near as I can recall, I have not seen this particular message before, thus I think I am making progress.

Not sure why, yesterday I made some changes in my network sharing settings and today I upgraded some firmware on my router. The Best Buy Geek Squad does not think that buying a newer router would solve my problem, so I didn't.

Run this command from a command prompt: net use \\trouble machine IP address /u:trouble machine account user name

    What prompts/errors do you get?

I ran the suggested command on one of my computers and got "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found. "

Make sure no any firewall software running, then try again.

Many things can be the cause of System error 53:

    • You may have Name Resolution issues. Make sure you have correct DNS settings
    • Have you enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP?
    • This problem may occur if File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is disabled or is not installed.
    • These issues may occur after a malicious program removes the administrative shares.

Run this command (from a command prompt): net view \\ComputerName

ComputerName should be the comouter name listed on the System applett in Control Panel.

If the net view command fails with a System error 53 has occurred message, verify that ComputerName is correct, that the computer running Windows is operational, and that all of the gateways (routers) between this computer and the computer running Windows are operational.

If the net view command fails with a System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. message, verify that you are logged on using an account that has permission to view the shares on the remote computer.

Now I am confused. On computer A, I was able to run "net use" successfully after disabling the third-party firewall, it also ran successfully with windows firewall enabled. The "net view" completed successfully.

Next I tried computer B and got error code 1385 "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." both without a firewall and with windows firewall. "Net view" ran successfully.

Then I returned to computer A and re-ran "net use" and got error code 53 with and without a firewall.

I do not know how to check my DNS settings nor do I know what they should be. Not sure how to check NetBIOS. File and printer sharing are on.

About the time I bought computer B, computer A had to be totally recovered. I used the HP disc that I received for upgrading to Windows 7 and did a clean install of the OS. And so forth. Then with computer B up and running I started trying to make HomeGroup work for the first time. Still trying.

The error 1385 "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer suggests a policy is in place:

Logon Does Not Work, System Error Message 1385 Appears

To resolve this problem: on the remote computer, from the Control Panel, select System and Security > Administrative Tools. Click Local Security Policy. Expand Local Policies and select User Rights Assignment. Right-click on Access this computer from the network, select Properties and make sure Everyone or any users you want are listed so they will be able to access the computer from the network.

On my Windows 7 install the default listed are
    • Administrators
    • ASPNET
    • Backup Operators
    • Everyone
    • Users

Also check Deny access to this computer from the network and make sure no Everyone or LAN users are denied to access this computer.

Evidently the Windows 7 Home Premium version does not allow editing the local security settings. I right clicked on the c drive in Windows explorer and selected properties, then the tab "Security" and gave permission to everything I could on both computers. Now when I run "net use" I get a successful result on computer A and a error 53 on computer B. I have run the ParetoLogic PC Health Advisor and fixed a thousand or so errors on both computers.

On two occassions in the past, I have been able to see the c drive of computer A from computer B and have been able to successfully open a file on that drive. So it has worked on one computer for awhile, but the next day the network drive is gone and cannot be restored.

Ah, sorry, I always forget about these...

Yea, right! Listen, I have a bridge for sale... cheap too!

Sorry, but my only suggestion at this point is to wipe (format) your HD, and re-install Windows and stay far away from these so-called 'optimizer' programs. No way of telling what they deleted from your registry!
