Problem: Windows 2000 Explorer can not drag & drop files, not to desktop nor to other folders. Can't drag items from desktop to "quick launch bar" nor to or from Start menu!
It also drops the screensaver after every reboot... it's not a major problem, but a peculiar one none the less :)

I've made ALL the available updates with Automatic Updates tool.
Uninstalled Winamp, to get rid of extensions (after reading a tip on the internet) to right click menu in explorer.
I still have some left, but the problem isn't probably there...?
Run MS security fix or something.... Windows2000-KB921398-x86-ENU.EXE (also after a tip)
Tried a drag & drop fix (probably for Xp?) Registry line add didn't got the option to copy it... should be able to find it though, if necessary!

I'm not certain exactly when and after which install the problem occurred, didn't suspect anything so I didn't test the function.
It can have been something else also... got some program that did things it shouldn't do, so it may have been that also.

I can provide any additional info needed. I'm no beginner even though I'm no "hacker" either. I can find registry entries and dll's, but can not understand all the info contained in them... and yes, I'm Still using win 2000 and can not afford to upgrade, when most of my current programs would not work under a newer version....

If anybody could help me with this predicament I'm in, that would be highly appreciated!

    Hi SKN66,

What type of mouse do you have? Do you have an extra one lying around? If so, swap it out and see if there's any change.

Also, when was the last time you did a full system Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware scan?

Thanks for Your response, much appreciated!

It's a combination of a cordless mouse and keyboard... Logitech iTouch something... running on the latest available and compatible mouse ware... ,I think :) That’s how Logitech identifies these: Y-RJ20,M-RB63,C-BG17-DUAL, but I'm a bit skeptical that it could be the problem... It's a bit tiresome procedure to shift mouse... the keyboard has to be shifted as well...but if You know something and not only guessing I'll try that also.
Do You really believe that it could be a such a simple solution?....
I do receive messages from Win's own Computer management tool from time to time that : "The driver has detected that this HID keyboard has bad firmware. It is issuing redundant report packets. "
Nothing new there, these messages was present when WinExplorer worked fine.
I do have an old Explorer X2 with double panes... it works as it should?

Relevant to the story is, that I got exactly the same problem on my other machine (let's call it PC1) with no connection between them, although I did transfer a lot of data from that PC to this one. I've separate disk's for system and all the other stuff. I know it isn't foolproof, but it's better than a complete mix-up. :) I did check PC 1 with a free program and it didn't found anything, except that it claimed that an very old and tested WinZip was infected... didn't pay much attention to that...
But, Yes that would be my first guess also... unless I've already tested that under similar conditions, and spend a pile of money on something that tells me that all is fine or labels a music match file as a "Trojan "...., somehow it doesn't sound so appealing :)

I suspect, a combination IE6 and W2k.... and all the "uopdates ", but....

    SK

Not sure about the above post, but, as far as your mouse goes, I'm not sure if the XP fix will work with W2K.

    Kelly's-Korner

Line 233 on the right: "Enable Drag and Drop ".

Another thought: Have you done a sfc /scannow?

Thanks for the tip about sfc.... this seems to be useful prog., unfortunately that didn't solve the d&d issue.
Regarding the registry key alternative, well I understand the basics how the Win registry works... I think:)
...but I could not figure out if the text after = should be placed under
REG_BINARY or REG_DWORD, my guess would be the former but since I didn't know what I was doing....

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] This far "no problemo" :)
but the rest is a bit more foggy ShellState "=hex:24,00,00,00,13,a8,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
    01,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00
Since there already is a name with ShellState, with different setting of a lot of numbers and should the value also contain the text *=hex: or only the numbers?

While digging for the problem I also found a prog. that may have caused the problem..
    C:\WINNT\Vzavia.exe
    C:\WINNT\Vzavib.exe
And they made a lot of other "programs" Vw0.exe and Vw1.exe up to 4.
I think I saw something similar flash by in Win Task Manager on the PC1 and when I stopped it and later deleted it then file transfer speed to my USB disk was really slow.... I don't know if this is related, but if Any of You recognizes the prog as a possible cause.... well, good to know, because then I did it my self to my computers, by being stupid and clicking something
    I didn't recognize :)

Judging by the lack of meaningful hits on Google for Vzavia.exe and Vzavib.exe and indication that Vwo.exe, etc are trojans I think your computer is infected.

Head over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum and ....

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in a new thread.

Yes, there was some kind of malware and/or trojan
Wv0.exe was labeled as some kind of Trojan.
Vzavia.exe and Vzavia.exe did got a label Win32 Renos-WQ [Drp] which does not tell me anything, but somebody may benefit of that knowledge, so...

Still, the original issue remains.... a new installation starts to become more and more as the only option left :-(

    Any more ideas? Anybody?

Sorry, thought that by removing these two, that part was done with.... You think there may be anything else on my PC ? Yes, obviously... sorry for not observing it :)
    Thanks!

    Not necessary to suss out.
Again, not necessary. What "it" does is reset the default values in the registry.

Did you copy the script to Notepad, save it as a ".reg" file to your Desktop, right-click on it and click "merge "?

OK, so in Notepad you copied (from Kelly's-Korner):
    *************************************************

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    "Start_EnableDragDrop "=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoChangeStartMenu "=dword:00000000

    **************************************************

and saved it as (something).reg (not *.reg) to your Desktop, correct?

You then right-clicked on the above .reg file and left clicked "Merge" and you got "cannot import ", correct?
