Friend's Win 10 has been working fine since we upgraded from Win 7 several months ago. After latest Win update the desktop flashes every second. Advised to uninstall the mfg's display driver that we had upgraded to. Did that and allowed Win to find its own driver. Still flashing. Seems to be a huge problem judging by internet chatter. Any ideas?

Have you tried a System Restore? I personally have not experienced any such problem.

Did unsuccessfully and now SR doesn't show any of the remaining points. It does not flash in safe mode. Someone mentioned that if it's not flashing in safe mode it must be an app issue. I see that there were about 10 MS apps added apparently at the latest update of Win.

Next move would be to uninstall KB3201485 and see if your comp settles down. I've just received the update on this comp and all appears to be working 100%. Build 1607 Version 14393.479.

I don't show that update. Weird I can only access desktop in safe mode. Opening update list shows Win 7 updates, but they must be Win 10. Latest update showing is KB3200970 on 11.9.16. But I believe there was a Dec update cause I saw that those 10 MS apps were added in Dec sometime.

Hi JAK. I would try Performing a clean boot in Windows and see if the screen still flashes after booting into Normal Mode.

What video adapter does the computer have?

My update history shows the KB3200970 installed on 11/11/16 and the next is KB3201485 today 11/12/16. I don't show any other updates between those 2 entries.

I had dl a new driver for his Win 10 display but then I uninstalled it with the flashing problem and let Win add the MS Basic Display Driver,,, but that didn't help. Haven't done a clean boot before. Have to try that now.

I would definitely try to get the manufacturers drivers rather than the MS ones.

Those are the ones I uninstalled thinking they were the problem. Neither drivers made a difference.

Interesting link Evan. I see Norton (Symantec) have made/created possibly another error. GO WINDOWS DEFENDER!

Tried it just now and no calming effect. No Norton on board either. Someone mentioned IDT Audio and iCloud can also cause flashing, but none of those onboard. They also thought that because it doesn't flash in safe mode that maybe it involves the MS apps. Thoughts?

The Microsoft Apps shouldn't be causing this. One thing you could try is to create a new user profile and see if that works.

Are you on Windows 10 build 1607 or 1511? You can find out what version you have by clicking Start< Computer< File< Help< About Windows.

This is a friends comp and did you ensure ALL drivers were updated AFTER the upgrade from W7? Did you get the manufacturers drivers as Windows relied on them to get up to speed.

    version 1607, build 14393.447

I guess I had run a sfc/scannow at some point with the Win 10 disk in the tray...the display adapters (shows 2) and driver now showing are both
    Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset (MS Corp - WDDM 1.1).

Driver date 3.11.13 and version 8.15.10.2702

Did you try creating a new user profile to see if that resolves the issue?

Been sick a few days.... Haven't made a new profile before. Tried to get to Settings, etc on desktop but the flashing doesn't allow it. I can only go C-A-D to get to task mgr and then boot in safe mode. Tried adding a profile in Settings there but I click on "add someone else to this PC" and it flashes but doesn't open anything. Tried a tip on accessing hidden admin acct:

go to safe mode; get command prompt
at WINDOWS\System32 type "net user administrator /active:yes" and enter
should show "command completed successfully" (which it did)
reboot and should be able to login to admin acct activated. (Just boots to my regular "named" account.)
after reboot it should show the hidden acct and the corrupted acct. (only showing my previous acct)

Are you using a Local user account or a Microsoft user account? When you are logged in, click on Start< Power< Sign Out and see if you can sign on using the built in administrator account.

If that's a no go then you can try removing all Microsoft apps in case its one of those apps that's causing the problem, How to remove all bundled apps in Windows 10.
