    Dear mattman,

    Your Post 20,

Seagate "extended" tests. I take it you're referring to "advanced" tests. I press F8, click "Advanced Tests" and find the only one available for my HD is "Full Erase (SATA) ". I read the "Help" file and decide that I didn't want to erase my HD!! Am I missing/misunderstanding something? (I did complete all 5 Basic Tests ". All AOK).

Don't understand your chkdsk comments. Please refer to Post 8. Ran chkdsk in Windows AND at (before?) boot and results given. I suggested these "looked pretty reasonable ". OK? you seemed to agree in Post 9.

Re internet----yes we have a "bundled package "---- TV,'Phone and broadband from Sky. We are happy with Sky. The only broadband alternatives with Sky mean extra cost which are not really within our means. Might have a word with my Grandson who probably has "unlimited usage" (he's a gamer). He could download UBCD and SP2 and burn them to CD/DVD for me (?). Bet he wouldn't charge much either !!!

Re your words in brackets re "Updates "--- My "Windows Update" is on "automatic" and always has been. So , I'm thinking all updates have been successfully installed---?---OK?

Will write again when I've got UBCD and new SP2. Any further comments, meantime, would be noted with interest. I know this thread is dragging on somewhat(!) but hope it can be left open for the time being.

    Regards,

    Graham

    Dear mattman, Arie and SpywareDr,

Thanks for leaving this thread open.

I eventually managed to produce my UBCD. I booted from it, took a long, hard look at the interface that appeared and chickened out !! The CD is now residing, all shiny, in all it's pristine glory, in it's brand new case. Maybe, when I've had a couple of pints, and I'm feeling particularly curious, I'll "give it a go ", just to see what it does. On second thoughts, curiosity is what started this saga all those weeks ago !!!

So, I thought about uninstalling/reinstalling SP2. Went to mssupport.microsoft.com because I needed guidance for this job ( and I didn't want to outstay my welcome with you boys)!

Spent over 3 weeks exchanging e mails with a technician and getting nowhere. We didn't really get on. Eventually, I was passed on to a research engineer. He was an Indian bloke in India. Spent 3 hours on the telephone with him and finally carried out an "in place repair/upgrade installation ". This was followed by TWO "follow up" calls to make sure everything was OK, which, basically, it was. No data lost.

I don't know if you've had any dealings with these guys. I didn't even know this type of FREE service existed, but, I've got to say they provide, (generally speaking), a brilliant "product" at a fantastic price !!

Thanks again for all your time.

    Best wishes to you all.

Brace yourselves for my next visit.

    Graham

PS: After uninstalling SP2, ironically, SFC worked. After reinstalling SP2, SFC worked and reported no corruption.
