Hey Andrea, it was my pleasure to help. We all need it now and then and usually helping teaches me stuff I didn't know.

Take care and hope to see you back here sometime.

    Jim it didn't work!?!?

    Hey Jim,
I tried what you told me yesterday and it still doesn't work, after I restart my computer something pops up and says:

You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Do you know what this means or is there any way of trying something else to keep this window from always opening up??

    Please help!!

    -Andrea

Good question. I had this same window pop up after I removed from programs loading at bootup. I had to reset it to load all those files again in order to make that popup window go away.

So how does one remove programs from loading at boot without having that annoying warning message?

That is exactly what I would like to know. Could you help me? Or will doing the same stuff you did to make your window go away do something to the system?? If it didn't can you tell me axactly what you did to make that annoying window stop opening up??
    Please help!

Well, my solution prevented me from removing programs I thought were unnecessary from loading at startup. But if that's okay -- and I suppose it is -- then the solution is simple.

Click, "start ", then "run ", then type "msconfig" in the text window (without the quotation marks). The System Configuration Utility will open, and on the "General" tab, click the "normal startup" button. Then close and reboot and your problem is gone.

so this window will be gone and it will stop opening every time I start up my computer? Did you have the same problem and did it fix it? What if this doen't work do you have any other possibilities that might fix it?

Instead of worrying about "what if," why don't you just follow the steps I suggested? The problem will go away.

i haven't tried it yet I will in a couple minutes though. the thing that is bugging me though is that when I clicked on the General tab the Normal Startup thing already was checked before and it worries me because since it was already checked before shouldn't it have worked before and made the window stop popping up??

Run MSCOFIG again and deselect any any entries relating to uninstalled software that still appears in the list.

You might find this utility useful.

The dial-up attempt is probably being initiated by a startup program checking for an update (maybe an antivirus program or a firewall?). Disabling the automatic update feature within this program should prevent the connection attempt.

I can't find a remove button is Clear List the same thing? And which tab is it General or Advanced? So do you have any steps you could lead me through that could make my Internet to stop connecting automatically? And where do I find the Startup folder?

Sorry - I've edited the above post due to it conatining nonsensical drivel

To find out which program is initiating the connection attemot, open the programs which load at startup and look for any "automatic update" options within those programs (the setting will probably be tucked away in a location like Tools - Options). Alternatively, install a firewall. This will tell you which applications are connecting or attempting to establish a connection.

Where exactly do I find the programs which load at startup?? Could you give me specific ways to get there? Or does it all depend on my computer? And do you know any other things that could get that window from opening?

Have you looked under the Startup tab in MSCONFIG for any entries relating to software which you have uninstalled? If so, what did you find?

I've checked and everything in the Startup tab has a checkmark beside it? Which problem is it that you are trying to fix for me?? The Internet connecting automatically or the window always opening up after I start my computer??

The message which pops up at boot!

Do any of the items listed under the startup tab relate to software which you no longer have installed?
