:) Also, do you know anything about virus protection of Linux vs. WNDWS98?

That's an OS James and not a browser. :D

FireFox for me. Earlier I used Avant but now I use FireFox only. For a few stubborn sites, which refuse to play in FF, I use IE Tab extension to open them in IE in FF.

Regarding your question about virus in Linux vs Win98, Linux is inherently more secure [if you don't run as root] than Windows. There are only a few known viruses for Linux as opposed to 1000's for Windows. Linux, though, is susceptible to worms.

You are more secure again if you don't run as root in Linux or Admininstrator in Windows.

Win98 is susceptible to everything as MS has abandoned it & there is no concept of limited users in it.

I should've included that, though, James, thank you, I wondered who used what OS, too, and I still got confused tonight on which's which. I haven't goofed with computers in a long while. :)

Ah, thank you, I'd only just now even heard of Avant, myself, lol.

That's a couple different times, at least, now that I've heard decent vouvhers on FireFox. I have a friend who runs a few of them from time to time, but mostly sticks with Linux.~I'd been surprised to hear anyone used more than two, but I can see now from this post and other things I read, it's because different browsers offer different strengths and weaknesses, too.

Thanks, this just reminds me of everything I'd heard when O first jumped back online a few mos ago, I appreciate it.

Boy, I never had any idea there was such a huge difference, yikes! So, I'd take the worms over 1000's of chances at viruses all the time, I guess. But I get a gut wrench off the idea of worms, aren't those just as bad? But you're saying worms fewer in number, I spose.

Right, they called it the 'host' in some article I read in thru here.--That's whatchyou mean by root, right?--And I remember the Administrator remark, from that article, yeah. :)

That helps bring it home, though I knew, yeah, we were out on a limb here and I'm way behind with the times. Getting another 'puter soon enough, but for now...

    Thanks a lot!

I have a friend who uses that, too.

...But I've gotten the impression thru what I've read that XP's better and that Linux is better than that yet, because it streamlines. :)

    That sounds better to me.

Do you still prefer Vista? Aren't they soon gonna ditch that, too?

As an OS I much prefer Vista to any other I've used, and can't understand all the reports of problems going around.
For Browsers I have FF 3.05 for everyday use, FF 3.1 beta on trial, and Chrome which looks very promising as soon as all the FF add-ons become useable on it.

LOL... where was my brain? I was still reeling from a report I read on another forum relating to Windows 7. I use Firefox as my primary browser.

    Matty,

As suggested by someone else (sorry I don't recall who), try a live linux distro before taking the plunge. Linux can have a very steep learning curve and you may wish to ask yourself if you're ready for it. A live distro lets you look without making any changes to your current setup.

    Hiya matty... :)

I use FF 3.05 75% of the time and the rest is with Google Chrome. For the sites that still have issues I use IE7.0. I might try the IE Tab "add on" that rsinfo is using to get away from IE even more.

Oh yeah...playing with Vista Ultimate (love it), WinXP SP3, and Linux (all different units0.

    Thank you everyone!

Lookat the FF's up there, wow!--I'll get back to everyone later, I'm up really late and I mess with my recent puter trouble that brought me here in the first place until late tonight. Thanks for your responses, that's cool, this's a big board.:) I'll see you later on this, though, promise, I only had time for one, the first...

Roger, How old is Vista? Had the impression it was just barely newer than Windows 2000? Admittedly, the green light over there says I'm a beginner. :)

Yeah, it did get a bad rap cuz I read a few different things that gave me that impression lately, I was just skimming all over though, nothing actually deep until last couple days.

I don't know what the beta extension's all about yet/don't remember, for this, for Windows 7, I wondered...I need to do some serious catchup, I know.

Heard about Chrome, it just sounds cool, doesn't it?-- haha.

    Thanks~matty

Well my majority of browsing has to be in Firefox 3, allthough for those devilish site that resist on activex content internet explorer 8,

More recently I have started using googles new browser chrome as its make application feature can come in handy for various sites, I tend to use this at work for phpmyadmin, and gmail, youtube, its javscript handling is much better then my bloated (extenstions) firefox

IE7 on my Vista machine. We have FF at work on one of our machines but I think its an older version (system is running 2000pro). I don't like THAT FF because it doesn't seem to have a lot of features IE does.

Maybe I should download a copy of FF and try it out at home???....

    MitchellCooley,

What features are you missing in FF ? FF has loads of extensions or add-ons that IE can't even dream of let alone deliver.

A very good idea. After installation head out to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox for a list of add ons available for FF. I am sure you can find at least some that you like. :)
