I'm not pushing as hard as I once did per software defenses. The network is behind a router with NAT, SPI enabled and MAC whitelist. Have OpenDNS at router with my my local network registered with OpenDNS Web IP filtering (Lan and Wifi) phishing attacks, including all advance setting active, excluding only Block internal IP addresses and beta SmartCache. Software on all computers include aVast and Spywareblaster. The kids computer also has K9 Web Protection (I custom set filtering) running during any web connection activity.
My final defense and most solid ... 300GB of "Image Backups" of all of our computers with image's dates ranging between 1 week to 1 year old.

    Hello,
I'm kind of in the same boat as Dennis L. I'm behind a linksys router that I set up so I have that and the previous defenses listed plus I was blessed with a hand me down machine that was a server (running win 2000pro OS) b-4 I got it, so I have a few other security features on my machine. I use this one for my internet travels. Some of which has a PW on them I can't get into yet. See y'all.

eset NOD32, the best period for many many years based on independent studies. Why does anyone use anything else?

EDIT: FWIW, I usually have Real-Time File Protection disabled. This is only for paranoid crazies and/or the computer illiterate. Proper "real time protection" only requires:

    1) NAT Router between your PC and internet source (modem etc)
    2) Latest Windows Updates (or similar if you're using another OS)
    3) Using common sense about what you download, run, install and open.

If one is going to visit a 'blacklist' site such as warez, torrents, pornography, cracks, or similar (WHICH I AM NOT SUPPORTING ADVOCATING OR IMPLYING THAT YOU SHOULD DO), it;'s a very good idea to have auto-scanning enabled. Otherwise it's just a waste of your CPU cycles and performance. Only people who have it enabled like that are n00bs ;) I have encountered various major system failures due to viruses in my 15-odd years using computers, and ALL of them were due to user error from not having auto-scan enabled. But again, they were ALL caused by stupid mistakes as well. For normal people, just Manual Scan your Downloads, web cache, and Windows / System32 folders occaisionally, maybe scanning the full HD every 3 months or so. That suffices.
