10-4 Yes the hd had been invented by IBM in the 60's

    let me expand and rephrase!

The Woz actually invented the controller that made the HD as we know it today possible.

    A link: http://apple2history.org/history/ah05.html

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, when I reread it it didn't read like I meant it to!

    Hi BillyBob,

    Thought we would continue here.

Remembered this thread after my reply to you in the "spies.." thread. As you will see, I gave the poster the stock "no DOS" answer. The other answers are interesting.

DOS may not be there in full force I do agree

    But at a Start/run/cmd there is enough to;

    View a HD Partition
    View Directories on same.
    View a CD
Start a Windows install ( rather dumb but it will )
    View a Floppy
    Change drives
Make folders ( oops Directories in DOS )
Copy files from one Dir to another
    Delete files
Edit the autoexec.bat. which BTW has the date of 5/30/2002 which is the date that I installed XP.
I could not get it to do a Deltree

The above is about all I would do with DOS from the HD anyway.

I could not get it to do a deltree.

gotta check something else will be back

    BACK

Well I will be damned. It will also do a MEM /C

A possibility. It * MAY BE * a holdover from SE. But at the same time all of the DOS files that I did find are dated with the XP date. 8/29/2002.

So if it is emulated, stimulated, opinionated or impersonated or what, it is there. ( at least in part )

The first line in MEM /C is

    MSDOS 12768 ( 12.5K )

A short piece (several pages) that may be of interest to recent converts to NT systems (NT4/2K/XP) is Windows NT for DOS Jockeys. Written to introduce NT4 to command line specialists but the information also applies to XP.

    Newt

I have to say one Great BIG THANK YOU

Very interesting reading. In fact it is one its way to the printer.

I had already found out about the Autoexec.nt and config.nt.

Now if I can only find EMM386 my one and only one DOS program that runs but not correctly should work like charm again.

HIMEM.SYS is already in the config.nt but emm386 says it can't be found.

And Windows XP has changed the PATH to something that even I have not figured out yet.

It is already setting TMP & TEMP to C:\Windows\Temp In fact those two set commands were carried over for SE.

The DOS Audio setting were even carried over. Just changed the IRQ from 5 to seven.

And unless I am way off base, this Windows XP Pro machine boots in DOS and then to Windows just like 98SE did.

    Hi BB

    Only a miniute.

    1. You will not find emm386 in 2k or XP since both of these handle memory directly themselves.

So if you are trying to get a game or some other older legacy app to run you will need to look at compatability mode! See below:

    http://cache.techtv.com/callforhelp/answerstips/windowstips/story/0,24330,3358390,00.html

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292533

    http://www.powerspec.com/support/tech_notes/xp_compat_mode.html

    2. When 2k Xp boot there is a transition period before the GUI loads but no "DOS ". You can get a XP "OS" prompt by hitting F8 and choosing Repair console. This is a s close as you will get to the win98 start menu's command prompt.

:):) I thought about it and came to that conclusion AFTER I replied.

In SE the Autoexec contents show up on the screen. In XP it don't. Even though I tried to make it :D

And thanks for the further info.

But if it is only that ONE game ( program ) that does not work ( properly ) in XP then I am Very Happy

Besides I never liked it anyway. And it also gave me problems sometimes in SE. And it is the ONLY one that does need EMM386.

MY Wife likes it and it is on her machine so for anything other than learning it is useless to me.
