I have an amptron 3726(M)T motherboard with a 400mhz cpu. It will allow an upgrade to 800mhz. does anyone know where I might be able to find a cpu for this motherboard. really cant afford to buy a new computer at this point so have to go the cheapest route to speed things up.

Any advice would be appreciated......diggs and insults are ok too, I have a thick skin:)

Try Ebay. According to http://www.amptron.com/html/m726.html your MB should support:

    • Slot-1 Processor Support
      • Pentium III support for 450 -550MHz processors
      • Pentium II support for 233 - 450MHz processors
      • SEPP Celeron support for 266 - 533MHz processors
    • Socket-370 Processor Support
      • PPGA Celeron processor provide Pentium II performance with integrated L1 and L2 cache
      • PPGA Celerons run from 300MHz to 533MHz

So a 550MHz PIII would probably the fastest you can get

I went google on "amptron 3726(M)T" and most hits were "eastern european ". I don't read those langauges but I think that I understood that it is a Pentium II motherboard. According to Microprocessor Quick Reference Guide, there is no Pentium II 800MHz, they top out at 450MHz which makes an upgrade pointless.

However, your statement It will allow an upgrade to 800mhz indicates that it also supports Pentium III. If the socket is Slot 1, it depends on the FSB, 66/100 for PII and 100/133 for PIII. You have to check the motherboard manual ... ;) ... if you have one.

Where to find a PII/III ... ... check on-line second hand sites. Maybe you won't find a processor but a computer at a reasonable price. In that segment, a reasonable price is "next to nothing and free shipping ".

Edited: Arie beat me to it but anyway ... ... we basically agree. Google is useless ... :D ... since it didn't bring up the amptron site on any of the first five pages.

PIII/550MHz comes/came in several versions. You should look for one with a 100 MHz FSB.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry it took so long to get back. Looks like I would be much better off saving some money and just buying a bearbones kit from TigerDirect. I can get a much faster computer for a little less than $200. I just need to research which kit would be best to buy.

Don't know where I got the "800mhz" idea. Downloaded the manual for this board and it says exactly what Arie said.

    Thanks again.
