    Hi Alex ...

You weren't misquoted, because you weren't quoted at all. The message you got was simply a message sent by the BBS mail system telling you that someone (in this case lynn1102) had posted a reply (but not to you) in this thread.

If you don't want to be notified of replies in threads to which you have posted, you can turn it off in your User CP.

Very good advice this, speaking as a electrician for 40 years. You just cannot trust power supplies, cables and the rest. My PC is shut down and off.

If it's likely to be four hours or more, I shut it down. For extended periods (like we're away in the motorhome) everything gets unplugged except the modem that also works the land-line phone.

Sleep vs hibernation. Sleep stores the system into memory (the RAM). Hibernation stores the system into a file on the hard disk. I have always trusted hibernation on laptop over desktop computers.

Hibernation takes as long as a cold startup, but all your programs are still open where you left them.

Sleep saves the system as it is, but (as far as I know) you can outstrip the memory by having too much (too many programs) open, the system might then "crash ".

I use the Sleep function on my desktop computer. I often use Hibernate on laptops if I want to save my current programs.

All systems need to be restarted occasionally or they will begin to have problems. For example, Windows Updates MOST often require a restart, as do new software installations. A restart will allow any changes to be made.

Running 24/7, not necessary in my opinion. (I am starting to worry about environmental concerns.)

    Sleep...a low power state.

Hibernation...reloads the system from a file on the hard disk, but therefore does not "refresh" in the same way it would from a cold startup or restart.

I would prefer to shut-down every day if I could.

    Matt

I've never timed the two, but I can tell you that waking my laptop from hibernation takes a LOT less time than a cold boot.

All of mine are on 24/7. I run SETI (over 1 mil points!). Besides, I have one that runs great, but doesn't like to boot all the time......
