In my XP Pro C:\Windows\Temp folder there does exist these files that I have no idea as to what they are.

Are they something I should be concerned about ? Or should I just cleanout the Temp folder once in a while.

    `DF5ABB.tmp 32.768 4/26/05 10:43AM a TMP File
    `DF5CB6.tmp 32,768 4/26/05 10:44AM a TMP file
    `DF5CE3.tmp 32,768 4/26/05 10:37AM a TMP file
    `DF71B7.tmp 32,768 4/26/05 10:43AM a TMP file
    `DF748E.tmp 32,768 4/26/05 10:44AM a TMP.file

There were a lot of them and I was able to delete all but these.

At least some of them ( 3 out of 5 ) appear to be remade at every restart.

I clean out my temps regularly and there are always at least two that are in use and cannot be deleted. Probably something being loaded at startup that uses the temp files it creates. Never has been a problem that I know of.

BillyBob-- Does right clicking|Properties on any or all of these files provide any info?

I take it you also have the files.

I can also delete all but two of them.

NO. Nothing more than what I listed. Unlike the below.

On a 98SE machine there are files such as tc$10001.exe. But they have a DOS icon in front of them. They also appear to be created at every restart.

I right click on them and it leads me to upx.sf.net and Some sort of packer for executables.

That one I will do a bit more investigation into. I have taken a quick peak but have found nothing yet.

    Thanks for the replys.

I think those are created by SpywareGuard.

You can delete all but two of them if the program is running. You can close the program and get them all but there's no point in that if you intend to open it again. They'll get recreated. Sometimes they get orphaned for some reason so a general housecleaning of temps will get them wiped.

I edited that first post to read "SpywareGuard" instead of ZoneAlarm. Somehow I always want to blame ZoneAlarm. :D

I get the DF temps on ocassion also. Not SpywareGuard or MS AntiSpyware, which I seem to remember suggested in another thread, because I have neither one of those. I opened my temp folder, cleared everything, then started opening various programs. The DF files appeared when I opened a Word document.

Dave, you are correct, MsWord does indeed make those files for me also. It usually cleans up after itself better than SpywareGuard.

We may be missing the point here since in my case the files always appear in
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp whereas BB mentioned the C:\Windows\Temp folder. It may be some other program causing his phenomenon or it may be that his Environmental Variables are set differently so that the C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp folder is not being used.

I think we can assume that they are Data Files (hence DF) and many programs may make them. I always delete them and have not had any problem as a result. Anyhting in my Temp folders is fair game for that matter.

It's all been said, but temp files are exactly that, TEMPorary.

If they are deleteable, delete them (after a reboot, if you have just installed something). And if they can't be deleted, they are still in use by an active program that needs a TEMPorary file.

If you want to track down what has them open, you can use WhoLockMe

Or TaskInfo and use the All Open Files tab.

Thanks to " WhoLock ME I found out WHO is creating the files.

    It is Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Now I need to see if I can find the culprit on the 98SE machine.

    Thanks again to all.

Data Files!!....(slaps his head) I was sure that more than one app created the DF temps, but just couldn't put any kind of association with them. A bit slow sometimes. Thanks SD2 :)
