    WinXP Home, SP2.

I have six files located in D-S>savagcl>Local settings>temp folder and i have no idea
what they are or where they came from but they are causing another program
to crash (for lack of space) specifically, the dbPower music converter program is
crashing. These files won't let me delete them even tho its a temp folder.

    The files are named:
    ~DF7F19.tmp
    ~DF8CC4.tmp
    ~DF78B6.tmp
    ~DF7761.tmp
    ~DF8630.tmp
    ~DF8814.tmp

Any ideas of what program they came from and how to delete them?

    thank you,
    savagcl

Do you have MS Antispyware running? It creates temp files with that name format. Close the program and you will be able to delete them but they'll return the next time you start it.

    If they persist try MoveOnBoot

I would be surprised if they free up any meaningful disk space - on my m/c they are 32Kb each.

Have you tried that in Safe Mode first?

Once you get them off, you can keep track of the folder and see what app creates them.

    savagcl,

I think I used to get those files when I ran Zone Alarm. Is that something you are using?

I was always able to delete all but one of them, it being the active one. They never caused any real damage as you describe though.

FWIW, I run ZA Pro and AFIK, the only temp files it creates is in Windows\Internet Logs.

Thanks Charles, I just double checked and I was mistaken about Zone Alarm. The culprit was SpywareGuard. I have quit running it since SpywareBlaster works so well and that's when the strange dfxxxx.tmp files disappeared.

    Best regards.

I just confirmed it by running SpywareGuard and got:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\~DF4EFE.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\~DF4AA3.tmp

So it would be in the %userprofile% temp folder on all systems I presume. I still don't think it is the root of savagcl's problem.

Safe mode will allow the files to be removed but a normal boot brings them back.
I ran all the clean ups/checkers i have and here are the results.

AdAware - D/S used, cleans up, ok
AVG - D/S not used, ok
CCleaner - D/S not used, ok
ClearMRU - D/S used, cleans up, ok
CWShredder - D/S used, cleans up, ok
dclean - D/S not used, ok
MRUBlaster - D/S used, cleans up, ok
PerfectDisk - D/S used, cleans up, ok
MS Registry Cleaner - D/S not used, ok
Reg Supreme - D/S used, cleans up, ok
Spider - D/S not used, ok
SpyBot - D/S not used, ok

Culprit: appears to be MS Antispyware - D/S used, retains 2 files permantly in this
folder. During running another file is created but this one is cleaned up.

Time to get a msg to MS!!! (waste of time, i guess)

    thanks for the replies,
    savagcl

My experience is that you can delete all but about two of the files in the /Temp folder (I also run Spyware Guard). But, it has to be done in a particular way ...
    1. Highlight all the files to be deleted.

    2. Right-click and select "Delete" from the context menu (or press the Delete key).

    3. Some, but not all, files will be deleted, and a message box will appear telling you that such-and-such file (usually the one at the top of the remaining list) cannot be deleted.

    4. While pressing the Ctrl key, click on the designated file, unhilighting it.

    5. Delete again, repeating step 4 as necessary, until all files that can be deleted have been deleted.
I suppose there are other ways of getting rid of these files, but this works for me. :)

Yep, those 2 remain or come back almost immediately.

Solution for the dbPower problem - change the configuration of dbPower to what
folder holds the temp music files.

    thanks,
    savagcl
