web searches results do not goto correct link

I noticed on my computer and some of my friends.
That when we search and click on result, we are not taken to correct site.
My friends unit will not allow him to access windows update site always takes him back to msn.com.
My pc sometimes starts to goto link then seems to skip thru several then end up some where unrelated.
virus???
spyware???
i have mcafee, he has ca and full scans show nothing.
how can this be corrected or does it required the extreme of reformat and install?
ideas and help, welcome thanks

While I know you've stated that you've scanned yourself the most likely cause is still viral/malware. Read a few of these google hits and you'll see what I mean. In particular the ones stating that windows update always redirects to msn.com:

Please note that "virus" is not the same as "malware" and many antivirus programs are not equipped to check for and clean malware. Since I have no way of gauging either your virus programs or your level of expertise and judgment in using these and know that it is vital to make sure the possibility of infection/infestation is thoroughly eliminated before moving on to other areas that maybe causing, you should read post #3 in this link and follow the instructions:

I have also noticed that you have posted this same problem on at least one other public board on the net. You need to choose a bbs board and follow through with that board. If posting the same problem on several boards it makes it impossible to keep track of what has been done, what needs to be done, and, unfortunately in some cases, if it was done correctly as well as thoroughly. A running history of any problem can be vital to a fix.

To sum up....
If you choose to pursue this problem on some other board please update this post with that information and we shall consider this topic closed. Should you choose this board please stop all attempts to follow any instructions on the other board.

Just as a curiousity:
What happens if you click a blank spot on your desktop and hit your F1 key on the keyboard. Help and support center should open if using XP. If connected to the net, Under category "Pick a Task" there should be a listed linked task for "keep updated with windows update ". What happens when you click on this link?

 

cannot display the page, states has incorrect address.

re posting, if you get a cut on you hand and need stiches one doctor will do. if you have cancer you are more likely to get second opinion.

notice by experience sometimes more is better.
