I would bite the bullet and reformat & do a fresh install. I do hope you have a current backup.

I agree with Arie - hopefully you took note of posts #12, #13 in which the need to back up your data was emphasised.

I don't think there is anything else we can suggest at this point to get your current Windows installation back up and running so good luck with the fresh install. Make sure you install and update all the drivers for your hardware devices after the installation finishes.

Thanks for your suggestions, but I ended up solving the uncooperative computer myself. Here's how I did it: I googled "can only boot XP in safe mode" and read another guy's similar problem on a forum. One of the suggestions was to boot in VGA mode and if you get into Windows, then the video driver is messed up and needs updating. That's what I did and discovered that somehow the NVIDIA driver had been replaced with an older version. I went to Toshiba's website and installed the one I had originally. Once my screen was back to normal, I installed those 7 windows updates, restarted and now everything is normal. And my computer was spared the sledgehammer.

Thanks for letting us know. :) I would still check to make sure that your computer is free of malware just in case. Its still possible that you may have an infection and by creating a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum you can get piece of mind knowing that your system is free of any malware.

To which I would add - if you haven't backed up your data - do it now :)
