    Yes

.website identifies the contents as a Pinned Site Shortcut to the Windows OS

.url identifies the contents as a Internet shortcut.

You can not change the shortcut icon of a .website file, but you can for a .url

Arie, no matter what I type for the website (using http, not, inserting a final forward slash, etc.), I am always told at the command prompt, that the syntax is incorrect.

As far as the confusion about my query of the difference between website and url, sorry for the confusion; my question was poorly worded. I wasn't looking for an explanation, just for what I should be typing--I was thinking that when you wanted me to type "website" and "url," that you wanted me to type in other items.

If your patience has been exhausted (couldn't say I'd blame you), just lock this thread. Its become a bit more time consuming for me than the marginal benefit I'd get from a changed shortcut. If it hasn't, then please let me know what I need to be typing in place of the *website*. Like I said, every combo I've come up with has incorrect syntax.

I checked and rechecked this post and I'm "pretty sure" there aren't any typos!

    1. The first command --- cd %appdata%\microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu --- just gets you into the folder where the web site shortcut is located

    2. The second command --- rename *.website *.url --- typed exactly as it appears here, no changes needed; just renames any "website" files in that folder to "url" so you can change the icon

    3. Leaving the command window open for now, open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and navigate to C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu, right click the file you want to change the icon on and change the icon

    4. Now go back to the command window, type the last command --- rename *.url *.website --- exactly as it appears here, no changes needed, to reverse the name change you did with the second command.

    Did that

    Did that

Did that, but still, when I open up that folder in Windows Explorer, the shorcut isn't there. I can post a screenshot if you need me to but its not there.

Don't know if this makes a difference, but it is "pinned" to the start menu; I'm not sure if its on the "all programs" side of the start menu.

Then I'm lost, too. All the shortcuts I've pinned to the Start Menu appear at the top of the left hand pane of the menu when I click the "Start button." That's where the cd command takes you.

Apparently, the first step is to figure out exactly where the shortcut is stored so you can get to it to change the icon.

There's no difference whatsoever... A pinned item on the Start menu....... is a pinned item on the Start menu.

If you moved it to the All Programs menu you should know, it won't show on the Start menu, but on the All Programs menu.

So you have no website shortcut on your Start menu, at least not created as Pin to Start Menu.

What is the name of the shortcut?

Go to the web site of the icon in question....
Drag the link to your desktop
    Change the Icon
Pin it to the Start Menu

This idea was posted in post #5....

Which confirms it is not a pinned website.

When you right-click a pinned website the options are

    • Open
    • Pin to Taskbar
    • Unpin from Start Menu
    • Remove from this list
    • Properties

This url seems to have been added by a program you installed, it is not a website shortcut you added.

So I suggest you choose Remove from this list. If you want that Web site pinned to the Start menu, drag/drop the shortcut of that site on th Start menu, it will give you the option Pin to Start menu:

Yes, exactly. We're dealing with Windows 7 here, what was proposed is not applicable to it.

Did it. I created a shortcut, then changed the icon, and THEN put it on the start menu.

I didn't realize that the idea in post 5 was the change the icon before putting it on the start menu.

At any rate, thanks Steve that was the one.

Now this thread can be laid to rest.

Thank to everyone for hanging in there. :)
