The mails were sent at 00:27 when my computer was switched off.
I've done a MacFee full virus scan which didn't find anything.

The same thing happened to me 2 years back. Couldn't do anything except change the password of the account & delete all my contacts.

Hi Paul chances are you can't prevent future emails sent from your address, WARN all your contacts and let them know of a keyword in the subject (eg something as simple as [YES IT'S ME]) to let them know of legit emails. Remember to change the password on your email account as well.

Anyway, to ensure you have no malware on your system please read this Post and post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum

Is the email account from your ISP or is it a gmail/hotmail/yahoo type of account?

Steve, I understand why you're asking but whether webmail or a local client there is still the question of how the black hat gained Paul's password. Fair enough if webmail based and a weak password there's probably no cause for alarm regarding malware.

I still suggest it's worth a checkup though.

Paul I doubt BTInternet has been hacked, I stand by my previous advice from post #3, get your system checked for malware.

EDIT: Just to be clear Steve was asking about your email provider eg one of mine is NOTREAL@virginmedia.com virgin media is both my Internet Service provider as well as one of a few of my email providers. If you're not sure post the domain (not the entire address, ie what's after the @) and we can maybe help better.

My hotmail account got hacked which is obviously not the case here. Malware is a strong suspect.

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.
