    Hello,

I am having problems with VSS on a PowerEdge server that is running SBS 2003. I use three different programs to backup the server. First I use NTbackup to backup the OS partition, system state, and Exchange database. Then I use Backup Exec 12 Quickstart Edition to backup all of my files. Finally, about six months ago I installed Acronis True Image Echo Server with Universal Restore, build 8.398 to backup the whole system for a potential bare metal restore.

For months everything was working fine. Then I started to get error messages in BackupExec. Now a few weeks later NTbackup is not working. I have read that the Acronis VSS service could be causing conflicts. Rather than uninstall Acronis, I went into Services and disabled the two Acronis services (one was VSS). I checked and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider AND Volume Shadow Copy services were both stopped and set to manual. I started these services, waited to confirm they were running, and still had problems.

When I tried to run NT backup it failed and the error log is below:

    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Small Business Server Backup (manual).bkf created 3/27/2012 at 1:08 AM "

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x8004230f.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:8004230f
    Aborting Backup.

I next went into System Event viewer and was greeted by a sea of red error messages - all related to VSS. Here is the details from the latest of these messages:

    Event Source: VSS

One idea is to install an update posted at:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349

I don't want to do that before hearing from an expert if I should install the patch. Can anyone help me resolve this issue and get my backups working again?

    Thank you!!!!

I see no harm in installing the update, although I don't see your specific issue listed.

Instead I would start here: Various issues may occur on a Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running the Volume Shadow Copy Service and either run the FixIt tool or run the suggested commands manually.

Thank you Arie - I will run the fix now. Do you think it is safe to use the FixIt tool?

Arie - i Have an update. I ran the FixIt tool. Then I started a NTbackup job. So far it looks good. It did not bomb on start-up and it has backed up 500MB so far. The job takes about an hour to run (complete with verification). I need to leave the office before then for my son's baseball game. I can report the results in 3-4 hours. Will you be online then?
