I am using a used dvd/cd-rw drive (Phillips CDD5301). Drive works fine but used it came with no software. Don't think I need it anyway.

My problem is that I couldn't play any dvds on my PC so I downloaded VLC Meda Player and it works just great, except it won't play some DVDs.

    For example:

I have a box set of Trinity DVDs which play fine
Plays my "classic episodes" DVDs fine
    etc.

But, it will not play Casino, Rundown, or Patton (two dvd set second dvd is commentary which VLC plays with no problem.

The error I get is: Unable to open 'dvd://g:'

Any ideas why this is happening?

Have you tested problem DVD's on other computer/players? Stand-alone DVD player? Not knowing what OS or Windows Media player you are have, but WMP can also play DVD's. PowerDVD is my preferred DVD player, with VLC running a distant second. Never had a problem with either I could blame on the player software. Another suggestion would be to clean off any smears (always clean in straight line from hub to rim), or possible bad / poorly pressed disk.

    Dennis,

sorry, should have been clear at the beginning. Running XP Home SP2, WMP 11. WMP gives me an error that a proper DVD Decoder is not installed. This is why I started using VLC. DVDs play fine in my stand alone DVD PLayer. the strange thing is, I can't ever browse the DVDs that won't play - - - "My Computer" doesn't show a disc in the drive:confused:
