Windows Vista Vista x64 won't access external HD

    You can bitch about Vista all you want.... I think it is irrelevant. Windows 7 is the way to go.

    For 64-bit XP was as bad as you think Vista is in general. XP's 64-bit version was just a stop-gap & hardly any drivers exist for it.

    If you're talking XP Pro 32-bit, then yes; that's a good OS, but has been passed by Windows 7.

    Companies are still running XP because they don't have the hardware capable of running Vista / Windows 7.

    Obviously if companies upgrade their hardware, they will (have to) move to Windows 7.

    Most of the computers bought in last 3 years can run Vista/Windows 7. Its not a question of hardware - its the software. Most of the big companies have investments in software running into million of dollars which are simply not compatible with Vista/7. For example, one company that I consult for has a custom made ERP system which refuses to run on anything other than IE6.

    In such a scenario, migrating to Vista/7 is out of question for them.
