Real Player shouldn't have problems with Firefox. At least, it works here.
    Please, check something for me...
    control panel>internet options>security>custom level>
under Miscellaneous there is the option for
    launching applications and unsafe file
this should be set to prompt

Did it again on the above post!

    A "clue" (I hope):

The page 1st loaded, then almost immediately it goes to "white ".

I had to get back in by clicking on my "bookmark" link.

However, I can "edit" this post and it doesn't go to "white ".

Is any of this helping in trying to figure out what is going on??????

    On my way...

BTW - I did a "Post Reply" this time and no "white" page...

Umm.... Question: The page is to repair XP, not Vista... Also, I'm using THIS computer after my former main computer (which was/is XP MCE) trashed itself and (because I couldn't find the CD) is currently taking up space and is used only as the conection to my home network for my laser printer. So "repair" & I don't get along very well...

Sorry for that. I forgot, you're on Vista. Obviously the above link won't work.
Do you have Vista DVD by any chance?

If I do, it is AWOL...

I think at this point I'm going to try a System Restore. Things were "OK" about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

"OK" means things kind of worked......

    Lest you think I disappeared...

I could NOT do a System Restore...

... and suddenly I was having a severe case of "Deja Vu ".

I'd been down this road earlier this summer, and the result is why I'm on this Vista machine in the 1st place.

So, armed with the knowledge that what I was doing now was the same path I took that turned my XP MCE computer into a door stop (until I finally locate the CD that came with it... my laser printer is still hooked to it for the rest of my computers to access through my network), I changed paths.

    I ran a Virus Scan. :D

(Did I mention that I have teenagers?)

    Stop laughing at me! ;)

Somehow, every computer I have except for 2 (my XP laptop and the really slow XP desktop in my bedroom) had a Trojan.

Having placed the infected file in the Vault as instructed, my Vista machine is behaving as it should.

As an added bonus, it's also no longer "constantly listening" on-line (another problem from earlier this summer).

I noticed that my now-almost-useless XP MCE computer was exhibiting the same "listening" problems, so I ran a 2nd Virus Scan today and found it this time.

So... the lessons I've learned this summer are:

1 - Learn to file. You may need that computer CD someday
2 - Even being "anal-retentive" about running cleaners does NOT mean you can't catch something
3 - When things are going wrong and nothing is making any sense, WALK AWAY from the computer to think for a while... but start a full virus scan FIRST!

So... Thank You, SG broni (and others who have tried to help in previous posts) for putting up with me.

Hopefully, having learned from all of this, I can now start helping out around here...
