When updating or downloading a new program the download box appears on the screen. The progress ribbon appears for a split second and disappears. Programs and updates do not load properly.

The first thing I wonder is if it might be malware. Have you had any reports of malware? Try doing an online virus scan (some places where they are supplied are at the Trend Micro and Symantec websites).

    Have you done several restarts?

Check Event Viewer, look it up in Help and Support. Look for errors reported at the time you ran the download.

Do you have any "download managers" installed. Uninstall them.

Do you only use Internet Explorer? If not, try uninstalling and reinstalling any other browser.

Malware: I think the unit is pretty clean. AVG Antivirus, 2-3 registry cleaners, etc. run frequently. All are kept current.

Yes, this has been going on a while. SOME UPDATES DO COMPLETE EVEN THOUGH THE DOWNLOAD MANAGER HAS NO ACTIVITY INDICATED.

    I'll check event viewer.

    Firefox is the browser.

    Thanks, Matt
    Carl

2 - 3 registry cleaners make me and most of us on here nervous most of the time. And what happens if you use IE?

The PC is at another location. I can't get to it until tomorrow.

    I will use IE.

    The registry checkers are:
    Uniblue
    Fix Cleaner
    AVG PC Tune Up
All are Microsoft approved and run on demand. Nothing automatic or running in the background

    Thanks,
    Carl

Hi Carl. IMO using 3 registry cleaners to "clean" your system is a very bad idea. I wouldn't be surprised if using those programs helped to cause your current situation in the first place.

The Fix Cleaner program and the Uniblue registry cleaner are both shady programs that try and scam you into paying money for them. I would strongly suggest that if you payed for these programs that you request to get a refund.

Even if you didn't pay for those applications I would recommend that you promptly uninstall all those programs from your computer as they will not help speed up or fix your computer at all.

Even worse, registry cleaners can be very dangerous if used incorrectly and some people learn the hard way that those types of programs can completely stop a computer from running properly.

Can you be a bit more specific? Do you receive an error message when you attempt to load a program? As has been said by Bill, I would try using IE and see if you can download anything. What version of IE are you using?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    Oh, Oh!!!

Do you recommend any PC fix (including registry) program?
On my 3 machines cleaning seemed to help...speed wise. Lots of garbage per run. The programs I have are supposedly Windows approved.

You probably have a list on your site of helpful tools.

The machine in question will not be accessible for a few weeks. I'll rate your help as *****!!! and close this case.

I thank you for your suggestions and the heads up regarding Registry Cleaners.

    Happy Holidays!
    Carl

I don't recommend using registry cleaner programs because of reasons that I stated above but I do recommend running the following programs:

ATF Cleaner, which removes temp files and other junk files from your computer.

Auslogics Disk Defrag, which defragments your harddrive much better than the built in Windows Defrag utility and this program will definitely help speed up your system.

QuickSys RegDefrag, which unlike registry cleaners this program defragments and compacts your registry but it doesn't delete any entries. It only removes gaps and wasted space making the registry more efficient and helps give your computer a faster response time.

The Microsoft partner claim is just that. A claim that means nothing and is only used as a ploy to get you to think that those programs are approved by Microsoft themselves which they aren't. Sure those registry cleaners are compatible with Windows but any awards that those programs claim to have are most likely fake.

Thats fine. Make sure to update this thread when you have time to work on the computer though.

    No Problem. :)
