In the last week I have developed a problem in Vista. All of a sudden I keep getting the message or error "Not Responding ". If I am in firefox I get this all the time. In time it will clear itself and I can go on. I get this in Microsoft Outlook while working with my mail. While working in a folder I get this problem. Just seems if I hang around in any project everything will stop and I'm told "Not responding" Can't pin it to one file or program as all will do it. The only thing they all have in common is Vista and or my computer. If I wait when not responding pops up in time it will clear itself but could come back anytime.

You may want to check in Event Viewer to see if you can find the culprit.

    start - accessories - run -- type eventvwr.msc

Also look in Task Manager (right-click on the taskbar) and check CPU Usage under the Processes tab and also look at the memory usage under the Performance tab.

Just a quick easy possible fix

I suggest rolling back to a restore point BEFORE the last time your pc downloaded and installed updates, patches and so forth.

Set the pc to NOTIFY but NOT download and install updates, etc.

Then when and if you are feeling brave, manually go and see what updates are suggested and are important.

One item at a time can be downloaded and installed. See if the pc is ok for a few days and if so, try next item or restore before the item was downloaded and installed.

Old adage, do one thing at a time so that you know what most likely went wrong.

Works darned well around here with for networked pc's, hard wired network and one Vista Home Premium running network of XP Home pcs.
