    Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade my Vista 64 SP1 machine to SP2. It was spurred on by not having drivers for iTunes to recognize my iPhone. I downloaded Windows6.0-KB948465-X64.exe from Microsoft and when I run it, it bombs out saying "Unknown trust provider ". It came from MS!

How can I resolve this to upgrade to SP2?

    Thanks guys.

Hi smarsh, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try the instructions outlined here, Windows Update Not Working. Even though the instructions are for Windows Server 2003 it should also work on Vista.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Thanks Evan. I had seen that page but was concerned that the dll's may not be the same.

Also. it's not clear what to name the batch files, where to place them, and how to run them. Can you shed some light?

T create a batch file follow these steps:

    1. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Notepad.
    2. When Notepad opens copy and paste the first set of commands from the link in my first post into notepad.
    3. Now when thats done click File< Save. Under File name type Commands1.bat (Make sure it does NOT read Commads1.bat.txt otherwise it won't work)
    4. Under Save As Type select All Files.
    5. Save the batch file to the computers desktop and then click Save.
    6. Close Notepad.
    7. Repeat the same steps for the second set of commands from the link in my first post.
    8. When you go to save the second set of commands save it as Commands2.bat
    9. Continue to follow the instructions in the Microsoft Support link in the order givien.
    10. To run the batch files right click on them and select Run as Administrator. You will see a command prompt window open while the batch file runs the commands that you entered.
    11. Realize that not of the regsvr commands will work since Vista changed the locations of some of the system files so don't worry about that.

From what you say, did you follow the correct link to downloading the service pack?

When it is downloaded, right-click on the executable file (.exe) and select "Run as administrator ".

As in the instructions, have your security programs disabled.

    Try the suggestions here
Error code when you try to use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates: "0x800B0001 "
    From what I found
Go to the Microsoft website using Internet Explorer. They don't support other browsers.

When going to a new service pack, I suggest you go to your computer system or motherboard manufacturer's website and get any major updates for your drivers (and software if they seem significant). You might actually find those updates will allow you to run the Apple installers (I doubt they would need SP2 as a requirement).

When SP1 was offered, you needed to install all the Windows Updates first before you could run the Service Pack. I don't know if the same applies for SP2.

Thanks mattman. Working on this with little change. I'm thinking it's time to wipe the drive and do a clean install.

:) That's not very low down in my arsenal now. When you add up how many hours you have spent on the problem compared to "pulling the plug" and getting a new brand new system with all/any cobwebs wiped out.

If it is my own personal PC, I would try quite hard to find the problem, because I keep it "lean and mean" and if there was a major problem, I would like to know why, even if I could not defeat it, basically, so that I did not fall into the same trap with a new system.

If you are convinced, grit your teeth, expect a brand new world, smile and "go for it ". (Look at it this way, your HDD breaks down tomorrow, you might have a cloned backup, but where does that leave you when you install it? About in the same place. If you have your data backed up, you can install a new Windows system and start again...that's the way I plan a catastrophe.)
