All antivirus products are susceptible to much of the malware. Since many are not true viruses, they don't get added to the detection database. That and the fact that there are new variants out by the hour make it difficult to block them. The infection in your machine was a rootkit however, and would go undetected by most all antivirus apps.

That said, I've long been a supporter of eTrust antivirus and still use it, though I've also been testing Kaspersky and like it as well. Both affordable and reputable.
