Virus/Adware can only start in safe mode, registry errors?

My next move would be to disable any devices non-essential to operation via device manager; Ethernet, Modem, Audio Devices, CD-ROM, etc.

Might also try adding the following switch to the boot.ini (where we did the /basevideo switch)

/NOGUIBOOT

If no change with devices disabled, leave them disabled and enable bootlogging again, then post the latest ntbootlog info. You could probably select everything currently in the ntbootlog and delete it so you don't have to wade through all of it.

 

1) Disabled some devices.
2) added the /NOGUIBOOT
3) Rebooted the computer.....Same as before!

Open a command window and type the following, then hit enter.

sfc /scannow

Have your XP cd handy.

Reboot when done and let me know.

Wish I could tell you that a recovery cd will work as well, but I just don't know ...... never tried and don't remember what I've read about it.
If there's an i386 folder present on the drive with the installation files, there's a way to tweak the registry to look there rather than ask for the cd. I'll go hunt that up ASAP.

BTW, in case the cd is needed, don't forget to re-enable the CD-ROM if you disabled it.

Open regedit and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment

in the right-hand pane, find the value WINDIR. If it is of type REG_SZ, right click and delete the existing WINDIR value. Now right click and select New>Expandable String Value and name it WINDIR. Double click the new WINDIR value and enter %systemroot% then click OK. Close regedit, reboot and try sfc again.

Let me know if the registry values are already correct or if it doesn't help.

BTW, I noticed in the bootlog that NDProxy.sys loaded properly ........ too bad it didn't show which driver it hung on this time.

Could probably browse that recovery cd and find the necessary folder to copy. Check your hard drive for that folder first though ..... it's not always in C:

 

296241 must only relate to the 2000 for when I do the mmc I only get a Console Root and there are no items to show in this view.

The is a i386 folder in the C: drive
it does have some XP (WA_File's, DL_File's, GI_File's, HT_File's etc) listed in it.

I did notice that I can connect to the internet in safe mode with networking on the laptop so I am doing an free online scan right now through Trend Micro using the Housecall maybe it can find something. Hopefully it will then I will go to windows update after that and see if it can find anything or change anything. Looking into other help post not to many people are friendly towards the laptops and even ACER and of course that I what I have.

Might want to poke around the Acer site too. They may have done something to discourage sfc. Check for updated device drivers too.

 

You might also have a look in the event viewer to see if anything jumps out at you around the time this started. Maybe a Windows update? I would also be considering uninstalling the antivirus program ....... relatively common cause of the stop error.

 

Dave, I want to thank you for all your help....But "I" just gave up....I took the laptop into the shop today and said fix it!...
I couldn't get any updates off the windows site last night and it was just a hit and miss with the acer driver downloads. After the online virus scan and letting it fix things I couldn't get back into safe mode anymore! ! !....
Dave at the store was able to pull off the files I needed from the hard drive "Thank God" and will test it tomorrow to see if the H/D is failing or just corrupted and he will reload the operating system and programs.
Sorry I caved but just getting to far behind in work !
