Very slow internet!

i have a windows xp pro with about 140/160gb left a 2gb RAM. i downloaded all the drivers and updates. i get this linksys usb thingy and put it in my computer to get wireless internet. The internet works but it is still heck of slow!! YES i am connected to MY wireless thing and i am only like 20 feet from the router! help?

Also please provide more detailed descriptions of the following.

Do you mean you have 140GB of free space on a 160GB hard drive and your computer has 2GB of RAM installed?

Perhaps you could try a different brand of "USB thingy" to see if that improves your Internet performance. There might be a compatibility problem between your Linksys USB thingy and your router.

Is your "wireless thing" your router or is your "wireless thing" something else?

It would be helpful if you described the brand AND MODEL NUMBER of each hardware component that might be involved. Then someone like me might be willing to do some research and put forth some brain effort for you.
