    Hi James,

The differences between ZA free/ZA Pro and Kerio free/Kerio paid is basically the paid versions have behavior blocking. They monitor non web access behavior in addition to web access attempts that the free versions do, such as application startup or if an application wanted to start another application/windows process.

If you want to go that route, then Kerio paid - still 14.99? - is the way to go. This is why Commodo is of interest, that option is bundled into their free version.

Otherwise, the free versions are just as effective in doing the basic firewall function which is to block unsolicited intrustions and additionally to permit/deny outbound access.

    Regards - Charles

Forgot to post a reference on firewall leaks tests.

http://www.firewallleaktester.com/news.htm this site presents test results on various FW's ability to pass various leak tests, you can run the tests yourself. All the major firewalls do the job as far as the basic firewall function goes. The security issue then is how they handle outbound malware connection attempts.

    Thanks, Charles.

Any anti-virus recommendations? And for that matter... what about just re-installing Windows Live OneCare? It has it all and besides... I've paid for the danged thing.

    Hi James,

I use NOD32 and KAV. Of the two, NOD is less expensive. Each emphasize different techniques, NOD is probably the best hueristic AV out there, while KAV is the best and fastest as far as updating the signiture file. Both update multiple times daily with no fuss.

    Comprehensive comparitives on AV's http://www.av-comparatives.org/

As far as I can tell, no axes to grind, unlike the suspicion about magazine comparitives.

As for One Care, can't make judgements - but my inclination is not to use suites. And if I were, I would try Trend Micro's.
