    Registy restore

Im not sure about windows 2k but in xp and in win 98 you can restore the registry from the dos prompt after a safe boot to prompt check www.technet.com for instructions, it seems like some time has pasted since you have been playing around so you may not be able to at this point. If all else fails you can reload windows over the top and not lose any settings.

    good luck

    Newt,
no I have not yet tried Tweaking Toolbox.

I will when time permits but to be honest, my expectations are low. Arie would probably have told me that TT gets to that pop-up but he hasn´t ...... ...... so it probably doesn´t.

    MOROZOCO,
I don´t want to restore the registry.

I started with a clean one and would like to edit by adding certain keys to control the behaviour of Internet Explorer regarding connection settings.

    Thanks for Your input,
    Christer

I think Arie's response indicated that TT will do exactly what you asked about doing.

Now I have downloaded TT and checked what it can do for me regarding my problem.

There is a section on IE Restrictions, Disable Internet Options.
It is possible to disable them all together from the Tools menu.
It is possible to remove the different tabs, general - security - content - connections - programs - advanced.

I have acchieved the above with manual registry edits.

I have found no way to prevent changes to connection settings.

This I have acchieved with manual registry edits, apart from that annoying pop-up warning window.

Maybe functions are added, in addition to those greyed-out in the trial version, when paying for TT?

I have a full working version of TT.
It is possible to disable them all together from the Tools menu.
    Yes.
It is possible to remove the different tabs, general - security - content - connections - programs - advanced.
    Yes.
I have found no way to prevent changes to connection settings.
Expand Disable Internet Options, then expand Disable Internet Options from Tools Menu, expand Remove Connections tab from Internet Options, and you will see the Connections options.
If you want the names of the DWORD Values to disable connections, .
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
    Connection Settings
    ConnectionsTab
    Connwiz Admin Lock

    Hi markp62!

If I remember correctly, that would be the same DWORD Values that I added, guided by the web pages that I referred to in an earlier post in this thread.

I´ll check again when I get to the computer.

    Thanks,
    Christer

The problem has been temporarily resolved. Our club house was burgled sometime last week and everything worth more than a hundred dollars was nicked.

The next computer will be bolted to the floor and it will have XP loaded.

XP-pro and NTFS for your particular situation. Lots more options. Otherwise you are better off with 2K since it at least has the full security features suite that was partly disabled in XP-home.

    Hi Newt!

XP Pro and NTFS it will be. The computer itself will not be a state of the art but more like a budget variant since it will not perform any heavy duties at all.

When we have bought and installed it, I will let You know if we are successful in configuring that one.

See You in the XP forum!

As long as XP-Pro will run, I think you'll be miles ahead.

My focus is on XP Pro but a generous person donated two computers, correction, vintage computers. They are both 350MHz P2 with 128MB RAM.
The first issue is to find a way to tell him that we can´t use them ...... ...... since XP requires more to run smoothly.
I had set a minimum specification, the same as my own computer, becuase XP runs very well on that one.

I've XP running on a PII/350 myself (test machine)... just add RAM (I've got 512MB). It's running pretty well with 512MB RAM...

    Hi Arie,
    thanks for the information!

I don´t know exactly what we´ve got yet but I´ll look into it. If the memory modules are cheap then it may be worth a try.

Well, I´m back after a bit of component scavenging. I put together a computer based on a P3/500, 384MB PC100 RAM (3x128) and two 4GB harddisks, one for WinXPpro + AntiVirus + FireWall and the other for Ghost Images of the system drive.

It works okey and is good enough for basic internet access to our own web site, flight planning sites and weather sites.

In WinXPpro, I made the same registry edits to the limited members account as I previously did in Win2Kpro and as Newt predicted, it works better in XP.

In Win2Kpro, the administrator account and the members account had the same internet connection properties and by clicking a link to a site, the modem connection was automatically dialing. After 5 minutes of inactivity, a popup appeared, asking if the connection should be maintained or disconnected. If ignored, it would be disconnected but there was also the possibility to uncheck a box to disable auto disconnect.
The possibility to disable auto disconnect was the problem in 2K.

In WinXPpro, the administrator account has identical connection properties as above but the limited members account is different.

The members account does not have auto dialing. The members have to manually click the link to the ISP for the modem to dial up and then start Internet Explorer to go to the desired site.
After 5 minutes of inactivity, the connection is just terminated, no questions asked.

    ...... :D ...... PERFECT ...... ......

Since the registry edits are the same as before, there must be a difference between a limited account in 2k compared to a limited account in XP.

    Christer

    Edited:

The members account had auto dialing enabled but when I edited the registry to prevent changes to connection properties, that space in the IE control panel was greyed out and the radio button was changed from "always connect to standard" to "never connect ".
