Ummm, last I checked, phone numbers (in the US) are 10 digits long - (123) 456-7890. So that ~3.5 billion is a little low! ;)

Well, hopefully the blocking program will allow you to block all calls from specific countries, or even area codes.

I just checked my Call Block log. I have had 44 calls blocked in the last 30 days that were previously entered into the Ignore list in my Palm Treo 680. Also, 9 more were added to that list in the last 30 days.

Also, Call Block blocked two Not-in-Contacts calls in the last 30 days that came in during the hours of 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Those are usually drunk dialers or idiots who have no concept of the time of day (or night) wanting free tech support.

So, if I didn't have Call Block managing my calls, I would have had to field 53 annoying calls plus 2 additional very annoying call instead of just 9.

    Indispensable.

    Not Quite.

I'm going off on a tangent here; but, who cares. I've got the time to write it if you have the time to read it. On a whimsey, here goes:

First off, I don't know how many area codes there are; but, there are not 1,000 of them (000~999). I believe there are about 150~160. Then there are restrictions. In a ten-digit number, a digit in place 1 nor in place 4 can be a "0" or a "1 ". The fourth through sixth digits cannot be "911 ", "411" or "611 ". There are one or two other restrictions on those digits.

Digits in places four through six cannot be a duplicate of digits in places one through three.

Some of my information could be outdated; but, it isn't as simple as ten to the tenth power.

There are other rules that complicate the math in figuring the total possible telephone numbers. The only places that have no restrictions are digits in places seven through ten:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbering_plan

    Now, I can sleep.

Okay, so knock off 999 million. Even a measly tenth of a tenth of what's left would still be an impossible number.

But hey man, if you've got the time, knock yourself out.

Just the ones who call me. They don't get to call again.

I don't understand your point. Are you proffering that if one telemarketer gets through one time that the it is all a total failure?

Did you miss that part where some are still calling regularly and being successfully blocked after several years? Did you miss the part where Call Block successfully blocked 44 telemarketing calls and two wee-hours-of-the-morning calls just in the last 30 days?

    What's your point?

The point is that it would be physically impossible for a single person to type in and manage gadzillions of phone numbers.

(If I was running an international telemarketing firm, simply rent phone numbers and use each once per called party).

That would be like trying to block every spammer's email address. It's impossible. All they got to do is simply never use the same email address twice.

No kidding? You mean a telemarketer can change his number?

I'm not so ignorant that I don't know these things.

I measure success with having blocked 46 annoying calls in the last 30 days. These calls were all from repeat offenders, some of whom have been calling consistently for years and have been consistently blocked for years.

If you have a better solution for a publicly advertised business phone number, I would be glad to learn about it.
