Ran sfc /scannow result: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Ran chkdsk. Result: no errors reported

Actually the info disappeared before I could write it downbut I don't think there were any errors. I checked using the command prompt and there is no chkdsk log/txt file.

I just thought that you should also know about another couple of clues. 1. Whenever I try to shut down, I always get the prompt that a program is stopping the system from doing so. It never tells me which program it is Force restart always works. 2. The entire system is running so slowly, that when I launch a program or ask it to open a file, say, the windows timer shows up and the program says it is not responding!

I have a Windows 7 professional, 64 bit original disk. Is there really any reason why I should not just go ahead and do a complete installation of this upgrade? (32 to 64 bit)?

Hi Howattee, Sorry to hear you are still having problems. The links below should help you find and read the logs:

How to Find the Check Disk (chkdsk) Log in Windows 7

How to Find the SFC Scan Results Log in Windows 7

In the tutorial on SFC, scroll down to the part about reading the log.

The error message you get when trying to run the Samsung recovery utility sometimes means that the recovery partition ID type has been changed. This can happen, for example, when trying to set up a dual boot with another OS. Can you think of anything unusual that was done just prior to the beginning of all these problems?

Your last couple of clues are not good news. Before attempting a clean install of the OS, it might be wise to do a more thorough test of the hard disk. Five years is old for a laptop drive.

You have to consider that your USB and card reader problems could also be hardware related. If there are problems with the hard disk or other system components, installing a fresh copy of the OS won't help.

Ah I see. I haven't tried to install a dual boot and I cannot think of a particular something that happened just before I discovered the USBs not working. That was discovered when I bought a new click free backup kit!

I had initially thought that the USB problem was something to do with my TomTom, as that is a known issue. I also wondered if it was a hardware issue.

I didn't realise that a laptop hard drive had such a short life expectancy. I am prepared to do whatever it takes to resolve this, so worst case scenario might be to replace the hard drive (either new hdd or SSD) and start a complete new installation?

I am trying to do your above instruction re the event viewer, and will update once I've been successful.

I do really appreciate your help.

Not saying the hard drive or the USB circuitry is bad, but you did ask if there was any reason not to proceed with an OS upgrade. Just a few bad sectors on the hard drive can cause an install to abort.

You can get a good check on the health of the hard drive with SeaTools for DOS. It runs from a CD so Windows is not running during the test, which gives a more accurate result.

    SeaTools for DOS

You can do some testing of the USB ports by looking carefully with a magnifying glass for worn or broken internal parts and gently wiggling the connector to see if there is any looseness with a device inserted. If you can find a device to plug in that has an activity light, you can see if there is power at the connector.

There are things you can try to improve the slow performance.

Microsoft Suggestions to Optimize Windows 7 Performance

If you decide to do a fresh OS install, download all the chipset and device drivers in advance, along with any essential accessory programs from the Samsung UK support site and have them ready at hand on a CD or DVD.

It might be wise to call Samsung before you begin to see if they have any general advice to offer.

One sure way to solve your problems would be to get a new PC. There are good deals to be had from now until the end of the year. You would get more years of life, a warranty and an up to date OS with an upgrade path to Windows 10 and maybe the one following it. Your laptop has drivers for XP, Vista and 7. That's an indicator of the age of the design. Changing in a HD or SSD only adds one new component.

All the choices are yours to make.

Thank you, Howattee. I don't see anything in the logs to indicate that either the OS or the HD needs replacement. If neither is at fault, then replacement will not fix the problem. On the other hand, reinstalling Windows does sometimes fix mysterious problems. It's a proprietary system and the inner workings are obscure.

If you are comfortable with burning an .iso image to disk, you might try a "live CD" for linux that will run from the DVD drive. If the USB ports work under linux, that would rule out a hardware problem. Important that you do not install the linux OS, just run it as a trial from the CD. It will be slow. You just want to see if it loads OK and if it recognizes an inserted USB stick.

If you decide to try the linux option, here is a link to Lubuntu, a version of Ubuntu with a simpler GUI similar to older Windows versions. The file size is just under 700MB. It's a handy tool to have.

    Lubuntu 14.04 download

Scroll down to find the PC (Intel x86) desktop image that "allows you to try Lubuntu without changing your computer ".

Curious to know, in all the things you have done, if you reinstalled the drivers for your card reader and if you have checked it again lately.

Now that is one thing I haven't done as I could not find the drivers on Samsung's website, with everything all scrambled up together! I was also panicking a bit so I shall take another look. Thanks.

I have also now run SeaTools for DOS and it reports everything has passed, that's running the basic test and the extended test.

If the card reader is still not working and you can't find updated drivers on the Samsung site, use the ones that are already on your PC. Just remove the device and reboot, allowing Windows to reinstall them. If the card reader is not working, you don't have anything to lose.

I would also try again re-installing the drivers for all the USB hubs and devices.

Are you going to try to reinstall. Sorry for not posting for a while. I crashed my machine and had to reinstall win 7 and everything else I had in it. Did you receive or create any recovery disks. Here's your Users Manual. Just click on User Manual(Windows 7) and let it download. On page 109 The manual has recovery instructions. http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP-X520-JB01UK

I have now booted into Lubuntu & the USB's are not working there either! I have also tried one last time to reinstall the drivers using windows automatic and it made no difference.

I had a look with a torch and couldn't see anything obviously wrong/missing. The 3 USB ports are all side by side and as none are working, I'm going to make a wild guess and say that it's the power supply to them that's the fault.

I guess I'll have a word with the repair man in Dumfries & see if there's anything he can do.

Thank you so much for all your help, guys. You rock!

Why not purchase a new power supply(AC Adaptor) if that is what you use in your country. It might be cheaper than the repair man. Samsung sells them so do a lot web sites. Try to do a www.google.com search.

    Hi Elljay,

Umm, afraid I don't know anything much about the inside of a laptop. Guess I need a crash course in power supplies. I'll google it right now, thanks.

Umm, ok I've been thinking about your post and I think I misunderstood. You are talking about replacing the external power cable/supply? What would that do if it's a motherboard problem?

Terri, I think lj50 is referring to the Charger unit. You're using a Laptop and it's powered by a battery which is in turn recharged by your charger unit which powers off the AC wall socket - correct?
Have you had any trouble with battery power or not being able to recharge it?
The fact that you ran Ubuntu and were unable to get the USB connectors to work would suggest to me that you have a Motherboard circuitry problem with your USB connectors.
This may be an expensive exercise with a Repair shop. I would be more inclined to follow antik's suggestion to investigate a new Laptop purchase as there are plenty of GOOD deals going at the moment.
You will have to weigh up what a Repairman will charge to diagnose your problem (usually laptop guys want to charge around $125.00NZD per hour) and we can buy HP/Toshiba/Acer/Samsung units from $500 to $900.00 for the average sized laptop.
    Your choice/decision. Neil.

Hello to all you lovely people, esp. Antik, retiredlearner and lj50.

I just wanted to thank you all for your help. I have now upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 professional and my USB's are still not working.

For the little I use it for, I am going to replace it with a used like-for-like laptop so I can just swap hdd's and not have to worry about anything else.

So once again. Thank you all very much for your help.
