Right. Below Windows edition it says:
    "Windows 7 Home Premium "
    Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation. Etc.
Get more features with a new edition of Windows 7.

That's all it says, so no, SP1 is NOT installed.

In Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers it lists the following:

    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2934
    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2935
    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2936
    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2937
    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2938
    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2939
    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 293A
    Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 293C
    USB Composite Device
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub

So there is no USB to PCI controller. This is after I re-installed the chipset drivers advised by Steve.

Btw I am currently running anti-malware - ooh it just finished with 3 registry entries (non-malware) discovered. No malware detected.

You have the Enhanced which is the requirement.
If you go into Device Manager > Expand USB Controllers > Right click on USB Root Hub > Properties > Power Management > Is it Checked to allow computer to switch off to save power?
You can check each USB Root Hub to see.

Obviously you will need to install SP1 update ASAP. Then you will probably get another 200 updates to install.
I don't think upgates will have installed because SP1 is missing. Neil.

I understand, Neil, that I need to install sp1, but every time I let it auto update it fails to install, and I don't know how to try it manually.

Also, Antik suggested the same about Windows turning off the USB's a couple of days ago, so I went through all of the USB hubs and disabled the option to turn them off to save power. Mind you, yesterday, I tried to check that they were all still disabled, but the 'Power Management' tab has now disappeared for all my USB Root Hubs.

Do you think I would be better concentrating on resolving my problems with installing SP1 first?

You can download the SP1 installation package from the Microsoft Download Center, and then install SP1 manually.

    Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

Save the installation file to your computer. When you're ready to install SP1, double-click the file.

On the Install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 page, click Next.

Follow the instructions on your screen. Your computer might restart during the installation.

After installation is complete, log on to your computer at the Windows logon prompt. You might see a notification indicating whether the update was successful.

If you disabled your antivirus software, enable it again.

well, I have run the manual update and it just failed! It says

    "Installation was not successful.

A system error prevented the service pack from installing. Please download and run the "Check for System Update Readiness" tool at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=122602

If the "Check for System Update Readiness" tool doesn't fix the problem, visit the Microsoft website for more information. "

The link referred to is to KB947821 which i have already run, but just in case i am running it again.

ok, that has now finished, with no errors reported. I shall now attempt to reinstall the service pack.

Ok Ok Ok, I give up. Service Pack failed again with the same error (122602) as above! It's official, i am now going round and round in circles.

Can I install a version of Windows 7 c/w Service Pack 1 with it? if so, where can i get it?

Running the file again without changing anything is likely to produce the same result.

Did you get any specific error codes? 0x800B0100 or 0x80070490, for example?

Before you try again, run ccleaner and clean out the temp files, recycle bin and temporary internet files, and manually initiate a system restore point. If you have means to do an image backup, this would be a good time to do it.

Consider doing a "clean boot" so that only the operating system is running. Here are Microsoft's instructions on how to do that. Scroll down to the Windows 7 part.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

    Thanks very much Antik.

No specific error codes whatsoever reported. All I get is what you see in my post within the quotes. That's why I said i'm running around in circles. Well, at least I don't have to wait for that huge file to download again!

Right, I shall do everything you suggest. Off I go again.....

    Ok ANTIK,

Ran 'clean boot', backed up & created repair disc, checked the KB's in the Steps to follow link above - all already installed.
Ran malware bytes - no malware
Ran avg scan - no viruses

Rebooted into clean boot as specified
    Tried to install

    SAME ERROR again

Is the OS on the laptop the one it came with?
    Purchased new or used?
Do you have a recovery partition or disks?

Read the SUR tool logs to see what it found:

    %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    and CheckSUR.persist.log

Have you checked the system drive for filesystem errors?

    Open an Administrative command prompt
(hit Windows key, type cmd, hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter)

    type chkdsk c: /f

    Hit “y” when prompted
    Reboot and wait

Have you run the System File Checker to check for damaged OS files?

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator; accept the UAC prompt
Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type sfc /scannow

    press the Enter key

Thanks Antik. Finally getting around to downloading this and trying it!

If this doesn't work I will be answering every single one of your questions on your previous post. Mind you the first one about op.sys is yes, I have not changed the op.sys on this laptop at all.

Did you try going into the Control Panel\Programs and Features. On the left side of the screen Click on View installed updates. Scroll down the list to KB976932 and uninstall it. Check for Windows Updates. See if it will let you install it that way. After installing a new HDD I couldn't get SP1 to install, that's how I got mine to install.

Lj50. I'll have a go. At this stage I will try anything.

Antik. I have tried running the Samsung programs you last noted for me, and surprise surprise the "easy install swupdate" program will NOT run as it cannot find my laptop/notebook reference and tells me that I have to download everything manually.

I tried to restore using samsung recovery and that won't work either, when it reboots it says there is a missing file, sorry I can't remember which one just now. Bang my head on the table a few times. Now what? Going to see about Lj50's Ms update. I'll be back.

Are there any letters and/or numbers after Samsung NP-X520. Do you have a service tag, product number(P/N), or serial number{S/N). The reason why I'm asking is that I am trying to find your Maintenance and Service Manual. Dell has a Service Tag(i.e. 7BBCF85), HP a P/N(i.e. WF456UA#ABA). The Dell Service Tag and the HP P/N are not valid, and are just examples.
