Why are there so many 'Updates', what do they do ?, are they necessary?.

I have a thing about leaving a computer running for 'Updates' to complete, call me old fashioned, (yeh! ok!) but I like to know the computer has :rolleyes:shut down.

Updates are necessary for the system security - there are many shady people out there looking for security flaws/holes in the OS or major programs with a view to exploiting them in order to compromise your computer. Hence updates are necessary to plug the security holes in the OS, etc.

And before you query why are there security holes just bear in mind that no code is perfect and when one hole is plugged those shady people go looking for another. XP contained AFAIK 4 million lines of code, later versions undoubtedly several times more. Yes, the OS's work but little is perfect in this world and no amount of testing can reveal all flaws especially when advances in technology allow these flaws to be discovered and exploited.

If you set Updates to 'Notify' you can not only check what is being offered, but also install at a time convenient to you and turn the computer off at your convenience.

Please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions!
